Not what I said at all. Not sure how you inferred that.

Context is hard, isn't it? Next time I'll try to be more pedantic so you can understand the point I'm trying to make.

This exactly. No one is going to mistake the G80 for a m340i.

Throw 437Ms or 666Ms on a F30 335i and on quick glance you're 50% of the way to a F80 visually. Power dome, side grills, and //M mirrors gets you 90%. What's left? Rear fenders?

Where were people expecting BMW to take the current M3 style wise in a world where the m340i exists? It came out of the box looking even more like what you would expect from a current M3 when using the same ol tired formula.

Do whatever you want, but maybe try something that makes you sound less pretentious.

What was pretentious about his statement? It's not like your response to his comment was diplomatic by any means. He made a point that has been stated plenty of times across many automotive forums.

Words too big for you?

You're crying about the design of a $100k car. You think that since BMW didn't design it to your exact spec it's now below you and your "I've owned 100000 M3s and a S2000" preferences.

Yet I'm pretentious? Oh the irony.

What're you talking about?

I originally replied in a sarcastic manner to your comment, im assuming you didn't like it, and I thought your subsequent reply sounded pretentious, you're free to disagree with me.

Now you're going on some tirade about how a $100k car is beneath me? My original statement was about how people can and should complain and offer criticism about whatever they want regarding a BMW, especially on a BMW forum. The car can be $5k or $500k, that's why a good number of people frequent these forums.

In hindsight I shouldn't have called you pretentious, I apologize for that. I actually think you sound like a huge cunt. Use whatever words you want.

One note: Canadian dollars are Moose Chips, not oranges. So Apples to Moose Chips. A WHOLE Moose will get you a lot of car.

I get it, but there's the other side of the coin……..those who longed for significant deviation between models; individualized character. I remember back in the late 90's, early 2000's, BMW was lambasted for their "same sausage, different length" approach to design. As time passed, buyers wanted more and more individualization between models. Here we are today with a 4/i4/M3/M4 that polarizes. Some feel slighted while others welcome(d) the change; the uniqueness. We, as "enthusiast" forum dwellers, are a loud, vocal minority (..much like the vocal Instagram bunch). We always have been and we always will be.
Maybe it's a few outliers but I don't recall lambasting of late 90's / early 2000's BMW's. On the contrary, the BMW's of that time like the E46 and E39 were praised by the vast majority at that time and remain classic designs today.

Also, it's a false dichotomy to paint "same old" design vs. more "individualized" G22/G8x design, because the answer to deviate from the "same old" isn't to make something that looks ugly. Even some who don't dislike and bought-in, chose a dark color to hide the design. That tells something is not right and they could have chosen a different path away from "same old."

That said, I do agree that the persistent complaints of the new design are getting a bit overboard. However, as you say, us "enthusiast forum dwellers, are a loud, vocal" bunch, and when we see something we don't like, we will loudly and passionately express our opinions. From this view, it seems incongruent to leverage passionate enthusiasts to express their opinions, but then cancel them when they express an inconvenient opinion.

With all due respect, your memory is short. The E46 had its fair share of negative commentary. I came to BMW at the beginning of the E46 era, so I remember that timeframe vividly. I agree with much of what you said though.

The Internet certainly wasn't what it is now back then, as well. Exactly where in the universe could someone thrilled with their brand new E39 go to get a similar number of people slapping them around? CompuServe? Usenet? Really vicious IRC channels?

Yes, the internet and forums existed in the late 90's, but they were not the universal access, no consequences free-for-all they are now.

Trolling has risen to an art form, it was just a fad back then...

Another funny anecdote. Even the E46 M3 had grille haters

Well, I stand corrected. Angry BMW folk were early to internet. Some fun reads in that archive.

Interesting how different the perspectives around the M3 brand were back then. From their view, a V8 E46 M3 made sense since the E30 was I4 and E36 was I6 and the E46 was going to be a “heavy” 3,400 pounds and needed the bigger engine.

Also, more than a few initial reactions to the first E46 M pics compared it to a Civic, LOL. The E46 M design was more love/hate in those early days than one would think (mostly prior to actual cars hitting the streets). Obviously, nothing like the G8x reception, but the love wasn’t quite as unanimous as one might expect.
