M4 Competition vs M2 CS laptimes and acceleration times - Mat Watson

I wasn't sure how this one would turn out, considering that Mat doesn't claim to be a killer driver. More of gap in the track time between the two than I would have expected.

I found him A LOT less annoying than in the carwow videos !

I think this helps prove the huge leap BMW M have achieved with this new platform. I don't think I will miss the M2 at all.

Not only is it a lot faster than the M2CS here, the fact that the larger and heavier car seems more enjoyable to Mat on the track as well speaks volumes of the physics defying nature of the G8X. Just a great out of the box setup M3/M4 allover it seems.

He should state the type of tires used. If the M2 was on Cup2s and the M4 on PS4S or Cup2, that's a very impressive accomplishment. But if the M2 was running PSS and the M4 on PS4S or Cup2...

The M4 is on PS4S, you can clearly see it in the video when he is talking about the price of the cars, and the M2CS was on Cup2's, because he was talking about the tires in his previous video, which is just edited to this video.

Video validates what many have been saying about this car - definitely not an M5-lite. It's more an M2C-plus.

It's unlikely that a true M enthusiast/current non-poser F8x owner can drive this car on their favorite backroad and resist it.

Tread pattern looks to be PS4S on the M4.

did anyone not think the newer generation with 60+ more hp would be faster on lap times, seems like his gas tank was pretty low so that would help negate any weight disadvantage, no? I'm surprised by what he said regarding feel since most say the exact opposite. Good showing for the M4 comp tho.

Opposite of what? I've not seen these cars compared before this. He drove them back to back and liked the M4 better. That's just one man's opinion and it remains to be seen if the verdict would be different if compared by another journalist.

I think Matt Farah, Straight Pipes, and possibly some others have said they prefer the M2 CS over the G8X.

1 sec quicker in a 1 min circuit isn't really much. Scale it and equal to 7 secs faster around the Ring, which puts the M4C on 7:35 or so. Considering it wears the cup2 tire. Make sense.

Well yeah, but they would.

They drive new cars every week. Farah specifically has driven nearly ever desirable car over his decade-long career. Of course he's going to say he prefers the super aggressive car with no real livability, because he doesn't _have_ to live with it.

If the only thing that mattered about a daily was it's performance characteristics we'd all be in Caymans.

1 sec on short track where the M2CS was on Cup2 tires, and the M4 on the street tires is very good result.

https://fastestlaps.com/tracks/sachsenring

On this track for example the M4 was over 2 sec faster!

https://fastestlaps.com/tracks/vairano-handling-course

On this slower track the M4 was again over one sec faster, and that only speaks the volume about the M4 because the M2CS is very fast car on a track

He asked for other journalists and I provided them.

Your logic is very convenient.

I think we are talking past each other. If literally all that matters about a car is how it drives and how sporty it is, and we agree that smaller cars are always better to drive than larger cars, then the GT4 is better than the M2C is better than the M3. We are in agreement on that.

With folks like Farah, that's all they are judging. He wheels the car through the canyons and then makes a bunch of (opinion incoming) vapid statements off the cuff then compares it to a car he drove a decade ago.

He doesn't need to fit friends in the car. He doesn't need to do a costco run. He doesn't need to take his mother in the car and ensure the suspension doesn't dislocate her hip. He's evaluating it very narrowly, when the M3 is explicitly not trying to be a pure sports car. It is a dual-purpose. That's why he likes the M2 more, because the he's not evaluating the M3 on anything other than 10 minutes of driving.

@dialogical.

Prospective buyers will cross shop the M4 and the M2, including the upcoming G87. Lots of people daily M2s, including the M2 CS versions. My brother DD'd a 2 series for a number of years and he has a dog, GF, etc. The M2 is the size of an E36. I DD'd my E36 M3 for a number of years. Of course, many others DD'd E36 3 series cars.

Yes these journalists like the sporty cars and they don't have to live with them in many cases. That being said, we aren't talking about comparing the G8X to a dedicated sports car. I would find your comment of "no livability" more fitting for a comparison of a Cayman vs an M4, which is why I added the convenient comment. No disrespect intended.
