Can we salvage the wireless charger?

I mean, this thing is a complete POS. Compared to anything I have at home or the office, or even my old Tesla, it accomplishes little more than massively overheating the phone. Do we know why? Coil too cheap or too powerful?

I hate putting my phone in there upside down or charging it with a cord. Any thoughts on a solution?

The problem is that when you're connected to apple carplay/android auto that itself heats up the phone for whatever reason(bad implementation by bmw?), then when you try to charge it wirelessly it heats it up even more.
If you disconnect from carplay/auto it'll charge just fine.

Go over to ProClip and get the mount for your car. Then pair that with the MagSafe wireless charger. Charges at 15W.

It's not just BMW, it's Audi and others. The big thing is wireless uses WIFI which ups the power draw dramatically.

I only use the integrated charger to charge my AirPods, and sometimes my extra phone. The location is annoying to access, especially if you have drinks in the holders.

Instead, I've got a Belkin Magsafe charger on the airvent (which has the added benefit of cooling the phone when charging/CarPlaying), and a cable discretely run to the USB ports in the rear.

I made my own using a magsafe charger and an Amazon center console tray. Works really well

That is not my experience with the charger in the base 6MT (which is different than the one in the Comp 8AT). The last time I attempted to use it, it was in there essentially idle for just over an hour (did take one 40-second phone call), as I was using the native infotainment. When I took it out at my destination, it was blazing hot, the battery SOC had increased by a whopping one percent (from 46 to 47%), and I had a warning message that "XX apps were closed because they were causing the phone to overheat". Literally nothing worked for 5 minutes until it cooled down.

That's basically how my charges if it's connected to android auto, if it's disconnected it's fine. Try it, turn off Bluetooth on your phone so it doesn't connect to anything and then use the charger.

Doesn't matter if you were using the native infotainment. Wasn't your phone still connected via CarPlay?

My wireless charger in my 24 G83 works great(fyi i connect through idrive not CarPlay). I could never use one of those mounts- to me that is for Uber and Doordash drivers🤣

Drove with my phone in the charger for 2 hours today. Pulled it out after parking and it had not charged at all, and was so hot the screen was kind of dim, even with brightness turned up 100%!

Samsung S22 Ultra for the record.

Disconnect from carplay/android auto by disabling bluetooth or turning on a vpn, android auto wont connect if you're using a vpn. Then see if it charges.

Android Auto, yes. If not actively used for navigation/infotainment, that uses damn near zero battery (1-2% per hour) if the phone isn't in the wireless charger, or in our Audi which has an AAWireless dongle. So I'm not buying that that's the cause. But maybe I'll try it sometime anyway. Even if that does make it better, needing to disable bluetooth in the car is an automatic fail.

But I may not bother testing, since I've now fixed the wireless charger:

There's a reason why the iPhone got the magsafe thing on the back - which is to ensure that the phone stays perfectly aligned with the wireless pad. This in turns increases efficiency of the system and less heat is generated.

I think inefficiencies in the wireless charging system, coupled with a high power draw when using apple carplay results in the whole system being essentially useless.

Ideally you'd want to somehow cool the thing ...

I'm thinking if attaching a fan to the back would improve the situation...

It already has a big heatsink (so BMW most likely knew that heat was an issue) .... and one could wire it so it only turns on when the blue (charging) LED lights up

My brother in law’s Maserati ghibli has wireless charging and CarPlay. His phone doesn’t overheat.

So, it’s possible

I did test the factory charger yesterday, on a short drive. Before unlocking the car, I disabled both Wifi and bluetooth. Since it would be going into the center console, this renders it completely fucking useless for any of its intended purposes, but I digress.

After a 12 minute drive, the state of charge did not change, and the temperature of the phone increased by 12 degrees F. Not a good showing, and (even unused) Android Auto can't be blamed.

What phone did you use to test?
I'll do a similar test w/ and w/o CarPlay on my iphone

This overheat issue is aggravated further by protective phone cases which don’t allow the phone itself to act as a heat sink whether it’s aluminum or titanium. My preference is to drive with a fully charged battery and since I don’t take long trips it’s not an issue.

Again, I've used wireless chargers with same phone in other cars with not nearly as much heat buildup. This one sucks.

Galaxy S23 Ultra. No way I'm putting my son's iPhone 15 Pro Max in there, even if the hardware failures have allegedly been addressed in software.

I use my 15PM in the wireless charger every single day. No issues.
