The car isn't faster with the Engine in SPORT+ compared to SPORT. I'd rather keep the pedal modulation as linear as possible to manage throttle for corner exit.

Suspension is SPORT+ only for the smoothest of tracks.

Steering is always in COMFORT because heavy steering is not the same thing as feedback. If anything, SPORT steering actually makes the car feel more numb.

DSC always off for the track except the first laps of the day when everything is cold, especially the tires, and I'm feeling out the track. It's on MDM for the first 2-3 laps, then I pit come in to check and adjust tire pressures, then one. more lap in MDM, then DSC off. Besides the obvious advantages of DSC off, it also saves your brake pads and reduces brake temps.
The valves don't open up unless you're in sport+ engine though.
I'm not sure that's true. I can hear the difference between comfort and sport. Same with my previous two F80's. I doubt BMW would not let us open the flaps in sport mode since it's actually the more suited mode for the track.

When you configure the M1 or M2 button, you can select D2 or S2 under the Transmission menu.

Is engine making more power vs comfort when in sport then sport plus or just remapped in terms of throttle sensitivity?

I guess I am the rare person but I prefer the sport steering.
It’s not so much about feedback but that I don’t want the sensitivity of comfort at higher speeds. Not sure but for whatever reason I just like the resistance.

M2 is set to highest performance in all area, except suspension which is Sport, not Sport +. M1 is set exclusively for launch control. Press it twice, shift to 2 and ready to go.

M1 is Sport Plus everything, MDM mode, gear shifting at 3. M2 Sport for everything, gear shifting at 2.

Logic behind it is, the car starts off in efficient everything, M1 is sport plus mode, while M2 is just sport. Allows you to feel between the three settings as you please.

Does MDM mode make you push the button twice? Kind of annoying …. Like the car doesn't trust my driving skills

It’s BMWs way of protecting themselves legally since you have to turn off DSC for MDM mode. Same reason you have to hold down the DSC for three seconds to turn the system off. Having to push the M button twice ensures it’s not accidentally disengaged.

Yeah. Where can I sign a disclaimer/release of liability to get it to stop?

But, in S2, you need to shift manually? For automatic shifting, you need to be in D1, D2 or D3, correct?

Yes for the most part you will be responsible for shifting. There are some exceptions. For example if you are in a high gear and slow down the transmission will down shift the transmission to a lower gear as you slow down. This does not put the engine in a good place for performance, just to prevent you from stalling the motor.

The other time the transmission will shift with out user intervention is when using launch control. When engaged the car will upshift automatically until the accelerator pedal is released. Even releasing a small amount of the pedal will disengage launch control and the car will return to sequential mode.

Indeed, that's correct.

For my G M3CS

M1
Engine: Sport+ the sharpness is perfect, it provides a more challenging and rewarding driving experience, you just have to get used to how you modulate but it reminds me of the exige I once had.

Steering: Comfort - 90% certain comfort is the the best

Suspension: Comfort - UK roads are awful, smooth roads Sport

Brakes: Comfort - so much better for trail braking
Transmission: D2 most days and dry smooth roads D3

The selection of D or S shifting modes is just the start setting. You can always select between manual and sequential shifting by toggling the shift lever following the selection of the M-mode. And you can of course down-shift any time using the paddles of shift lever even if you've selected a D mode. I choose S modes for my M1 and M2 buttons as defaults, for now other reason than I had to pick one.

Garage List
2024 M4 Comp X-drive…

M2: (Drag strip settings)
  • Sport plus
  • S3 Transmission
  • Comfort suspension (for weight transfer)
  • DSC full off
  • 4WD
  • Sport brakes
  • Sport steering

M1: (Street, normal cruising)
  • Sports throttle
  • D3 Transmission
  • Sport suspension
  • DSC On
  • 4WD
  • Sports steering
  • Sports Brakes

M2: (Agressive Street)
  • Sport Plus Throttle
  • D2 (Sometimes D3)
  • Sport suspension
  • DSC full off
  • 4WD
  • Sport brakes
  • Sport steering

I don’t really like 4WD Sport. I prefer the more consistent front/rear torque split of 4WD.

Also the valves open in comfort, sport and sport plus…what is different is the throttle positions/load at which they open and the percentage of opening. Once of the members here showed the exhaust valve mapping to load/throttle input here somewhere via a screenshot of tuning software.

I have the 6MT and set M1 as sport engine and steering but comfort suspension and brake with M sound off and traction on and auto start/stop on. M2 is sport+ engine and sport suspension and sport brake and MDM traction and M sound on and auto start/stop off. For our drive this weekend the roads were super smooth most of the time so I upped suspension in M1 and M2 to sport and sport plus.

When I had the ZF8 last year (comp x) the additional complication of the transmission drove me a little nuts. Not as bad though as the DCT in my e93 with its 6 settings.

Newbie here. What does sport engine do? I’m still in break in mileage so I’m taking it easy in my 2024 M4 Comp.

Increased throttle response.
I would avoid sport + until after break-in period, as that was the advice from a senior BMW engineer. Not sure it matters though…
