Break in drive/ weekend getaway

Hi guys,

My M3 is arriving likely next week and I want to get the break in done quickly. I am in Vancouver, BC and don't want to go North for the break in.

I am looking for a nice drive along the Washington/Oregon coast, get different revs and speeds in for a Saturday and Sunday. Ideally a scenic route with a overnight stop in a nice small/sleepy town with good food and a nice place to sleep to keep the missus happy.

I thought about going to Astoria, WA along the coast.

Anyone of you have any ideas for a nice trip?

Thanks
Chris

Congratulations, Chris. I'm not too familiar with Astoria but a bit south of there is Cannon Beach -- maybe a bit pricey but this time of year not too bad. (More expensive on the weekend, though.) You can google it.

Enjoy your trip and the new car!

Thanks MT-M3! Will check that area out too!

In genereal, do you have to book the ferries in advance, e.g. Port Townsend - Coupeville Ferry and do they have enough ground clearance? Thinking of making it to the coast fairly early in and then taking the 101 West/ South

Astoria is a great choice. Consider 47 in Oregon if time permits. One of the best roads I've ever been on.

Definitely you need a reservation on weekends for that ferry. You can check the tide, ground clearance can be an issue at low tide for sure on the coupeville side. Sometimes they cancel the ferry due to it.

I would recommend going even more south of Cannon Beach. Like Yachats, Florence, Oregon Dunes, Sea lion caves. Way nicer scenery, rocky coastline, beautiful little towns underway and twisting roads.

Just did Cannon Beach myself for our wedding anniversary. Just one night at Stephanie Inn. $600 for the night (mid-week rate) including wonderful ocean view and an incredible breakfast. Great ocean views. In the tsunami zone, as is much of Cannon Beach and other sections of the Oregon shoreline.

So do we get a trip report? Did you do the drive and where did you go?

Sure! I ended up going to Seaside, OR and took the scenic road via Olympia, Aberdeen, Westport and Astoria. Return via Longview, OR and up the 5 back to BC. Just pretty much driving and fuelling up, was about a 30hrs in total as I had to be back home. Nevertheless, the BMW dealer was surprised that I completed the break in within 3 weeks, also being on vacation for 1 week in between. I will definitely go back down there, beautiful landscape and people and cant wait for the summer to go up the mountain on the WA side
