This is a fun question!

RWD just because it's more fun - same reason I got the base M3 for its 6-speed MT.

I'm not really maximizing for drag launches or straight line speed.

I had an AWD performance sedan up until I traded it in for the M3 in April (18' Subaru STI). Absolute beast in the canyons on sticky tires with the DCCD (driver controlled center differential) and the automatic torque distribution that provides, but I found myself just wanting more control and the ability to get squirrely with the rear wheels.

If I lived back in the Northeast though for sure AWD.

I chose RWD.

Like many here i assume, i have had my shares of all platforms, FWD, RWD, AWD. My daily is AWD with all seasons. Just fine in winter.

My last daily, also AWD + manual. Just fine in winter, absolutely unstoppable when the one winter i had winter tires on.

My car before that was RWD, a camaro. Had to put winter tires on it. It was flawless.

Tires make a big difference.

I didn't want the AWD in the M3 comp because i didn't need it. I don't care for max 0-60 times as these cars seem to have good traction already. Plus it's not like the x-drive version of the M3/M4 has a bump in power to make up for the extra weight the AWD will bring.

I currently have a 700+hp C7 z06 and it's a handful. If anything i wish my corvette was AWD. That much power to the rear wheels + a manual = roll racing car only.

I am on the C8 z06 waiting list. And a ME platform will always have good traction however the thought of an AWD corvette (the hybrid C8 variant) is very intriguing.

I initially want the AWD but my friends convinced me the RWD will be sufficient. My fear was it is a 500 HP car and looking at YouTube and watching guys lose it and crash, I don't want to be that guy. I am not careless but I will want to test it at some point. I just want to enjoy car and could care less about drifting or making the back end getting loose.

I chose all wheel drive. I live in California and absolutely don’t need it. But will it be fun. Oh Yeah! I’m not tracking the car I just want something to enjoy and it will be fun going through all the different modes and as I understand you can put it in rwd and still set the traction from 1-10 if you have the m driver analysis package. I might have said the wrong package but its the one that has the drift analyzer and it’s only $900 or $1000. Someone please correct me if I am wrong about anything I just said.

As you all can read, everyone of us has his/her own reasons to choose this instead of that.

Both RWD and AWD are incredible. To me it is just a matter of tastes.

When i order my G80, it would definitely be a RWD.

Having owned several AWD and FWD vehicles in the past, i want a RWD and i believe G80 would be the perfect one. I ordered a F87 this summer and finally cancelled it as its was too small for my preference.

Also this would not be my DD and might be able to tackle MI winters with a set of winter wheels if required.

I was going to do AWD because of these harsh Florida winters but decided to go with RWD instead.

You won't crash.

500hp is not that much plus the traction control/torque management these days, especially in BMW i heard, is very very good.

I have 700+ in my C7 z06 and i drive with the summer tires all year round, as long as the roads are dry. I still have my fun but i'm very selective on when i stomp on that right pedal. You'll be fine if you have any sort of discipline.

I had the first chance to really test AWD vs RWD on track 2 days ago. I've posted the video here, but in a nutshell the RWD mode in the xDrive is superb, and drifts beautifully (with traction control off as I didn't test the 10 stage MDM mode).

I honestly couldn't see myself buying RWD anymore - M division have nailed this M xDrive!

I lived in Florida for 9 years. For 6-8 months out of the year, it rains intensly everyday at around 5pm. For that alone, I'd go with AWD.

I’ve lived in Florida my entire life. Not sure what area you lived in that it rained everyday at 5:00 pm for 6-8 months. That’s entirely untrue.

I will agree that starting in about June through August we do get some significant rain.

I believe what he's saying is true, can't confirm if it's 6-8months though. I went to Orlando for a week and it rained like clockwork around 5PM everyday. The sky would be clear all day and out of nowhere it would start raining. The rain didn't last long though, maybe less than an hour. However, that wouldn't influence me to get an AWD for such amount of rain.

We do have a lot of rain in the summer. Sometimes it does rain daily. 6-8 months of daily rain is totally not true however. I’d say we have 3 months where it rains at least 90% of the days for a short period of time (an hour or so).

Thanks, does the AWD feel heavier and how is the steering? Did it loose its accuracy or feel?

I like top end performance vs 0-60 performance. Another reason why i didn't want AWD.

I'm sure the x-drive's performance (at least top end?) of the m3/m4 will be slightly hindered due to the added weight. But we'll have to see the reviews when they come out.

I’ll bet it is quite scenic out there. For just about any snow conditions I would want a more capable 4x4 vehicle to use. I had a B8.5 S4 with Blizzacks in winter and while it was ok, clearance is always an issue and salt is hard on the vehicle. And Quattro with sport diff was better than xdrive in my experience. Used my full size truck in bad weather. Wouldn’t want to drive an M3 in snow regularly and I have plenty of experience in snow driving.

AWD for performance is a different story.

Interesting. I had a B8.5 S4 with the sports differential as well but with Conti DWS's and I didn't have any issue getting to and from work, even during blizzards (same story with my Golf R). I see that you are in Pennsylvania, and I did live in Philadelphia for a while and when it snowed badly there, they did not clear the roads as well as in the NYC area, so maybe that contributed. I'm hoping what you're saying is not true because my AWD M3 is going to be my only car here in NYC.

xDrive is where its at, especially if you can have both, in the same package. Weather doesn't matter much, its the performance, and sure footedness you get from xDrive. And if you plan to mod the car, at all, I wouldn't even think about getting RWD. 700Hp in this car, would be a traction nightmare. I feel like AWD is just more balanced, and I don't want any surprises, mid corner. I just enjoy the taut feeling of AWD. The car just feels tighter in every aspect. Having come from highly modified (Over 500-600HP) AWD Eclipses and Evos, you learn to enjoy everything about AWD.

That could be it. Or I am just used to my truck being able to handle any snow with ease. Your AWD M3 will be an awesome car from what I can see. I am leaning toward a base for the 6MT.
