OP here- I ended up selling the car, not for this reason…but honestly. Still doesn’t seem normal to me. I had an M2 Comp and never remember it to this extent. It’s a very noticeable up and down on the RPM gauge and heard from the exterior exhaust…just not very pleasant no matter what. And I’m talking fully warm. Idk— I wonder about long term.

Fair enough - nothing's worse than when you have an issue on a new car and the dealership/manufacturer can't/won't fix it b/c they won't spend the time to properly track it down, even though you show them others don't have this issue. F'ing hate that!

So the (literally) everyone here who said it was normal and had cars up into the 30-40k mile range wasn't enough to convince you?

Nope. Simply was checking in. I sold it for a different reason AS stated. Also, it (literally) wasn’t everyone who said they had the same occurrence and others had the instability go away by adjusting gap in spark plugs or fuel additives for whatever reason.

I have extensive experience working in BMW service. Kindly buzz off, thanks.
Pages and pages of people here saying it's normal and even mentioned in the manual, but no I guess your experience matters more.

Please show me in the manual where it states this. It does not specifically mention idle fluctuation. If you read the entire thread you’d see someone quoted directly from the manual which I kindly stated is NOT what I’m experiencing:

-WARM UP:
During the engine warm up phase, the high performance engine has a somewhat rougher running behavior because of emissions controls.

During the warm up phase, the start occurs at an increased idle speed which leads to increased exhaust system noises.

THIS IS NOT DURING WARM UP.

What’s the issue with adjusting the spark plug gap tighter as long as you don’t have a leaking injector? Nobody runs a .032 stock out the box gap on plugs anymore, nobody with forced induction anyway. NGK Iridiums at .028 max and end of story.

I respect your opinion. I guess I'm just still in the "unsure" camp, but everyone saying it's normal is absolutely reassuring, what isn't is the ones who don't have it...but alas, like I said, it is the first car I've had the pleasure of "owning" with such an amount of horsepower and torque ready to go-- so I see how it could be working as designed. I never experienced one performance issue.

I sold my lease at the right time making nearly 6500 in equity; at a time where I shouldn't have had an M4 payment to begin with, it made practical (ugh) sense. I miss it all the time! I'll be back in an S58 soon enough, characteristic M idle or not.
