I'm going to keep the mirror tap for my R7 and the separate battery power for the dashcam.

Apologies if this has already been asked but.. why are so many people installing dash cams? Doesn't the BMW already have a drive recorder? Or is this for folk without the parking assist package?

Drive recorder and a dashcam are very different things. Parking assist package has nothing to do with the desire to have "record" of any incidents that happen to your car parked or driving on the road. Also, drive recorder will not continually record on the open road like a dashcam.

I would mirror tap the radar and hardwire dashcam to the fuse panel anyway as I would want parking mode.

Here's the final answer from Blendmount support:

"Hi,
Unfortunately we do not have a way to connect a BlackView to another Blendmount.
The only cameras that can attach to one of our Blendmounts are the Escort M1 and M2.
Then all you would need is the BM1-UP1 screw kit."

Noooo!!!! Not what I was wanting to hear. A company that specializes in making mounts you would think they would have something available. I may have to fabricate something.

Is there any concern with installing this on glass that's already been tinted? Will it stay attached with the adhesive tape?

It'll attach perfectly fine. The 3M tape it comes with is plenty strong.

My issue was, my windshield is tinted and I asked my detailer (he installed my tint) if it's safe to attach the dashcam to tinted windows and he said yes. I was worried if I ever remove the camera I'll rip the tint out.

Thanks. I was concerned about the rear.

My experience with tinted windows and dashcams is that it won't rip the tint but leave residue from the 3M tape. You should be fine

Thanks for the DIY writeup, Megatron.
This will come really handy when I decide to install one.

How does that tamper proof casing work, btw?
Is there a key to remove that cover, or is it just a plastic cap that's a PITA to remove?

You're welcome.

The temper proof case comes with its own mount that you attach the camera to. There are a total of three allen/hex screws. Two screws are for the cover to prevent unplugging of the cables and removal of the SD card. The third screw holds the camera in place securely, so it can't be removed.

Ah I see. That makes sense.
It sounds like a good deterrence measure to avoid dealer techs from unplugging the power cable.
Again, thanks for the feedback. I need to get me one of these… lots of crazy drivers in ATL.

So, anyone had any issues after hardwiring the camera? I hardwired the camera as described in the first post. However, the car gives a fault when it's all wired up.

High beam left is faulty according to the car, but it works. If I remove the fuse taps, the error resets.

Are you using the fusebox behind the glovebox? Mine is using the one in the trunk with no issues.

Is it better to use the fusebox in the back instead of the front?

I would prefer the front. Less wire to run.

Great write up here, thanks. I'm curious whether people who are also adding R7/V1 detectors to their fuse panels (I prefer that over the mirror tap) to have enough room/amperage to drive both? Which fuses are you using for the radar?

Is there any reason to get an add-on battery pack?

BTW - for those ordering directly from Blackvue, it looks like you can use coupon code "VortexRadar" to get 10% off.
As regards add-on battery it depends how long you are likely to leave the car standing. Once the cars battery drops to 12v it will switch off, but as an idea my car hasn't moved for 2 days and still in park mode/ recording

Great guide. I wish I had this a few months ago.

Maybe it's the way I installed it, but does anyone get the battery message after leaving the car overnight with the blackvue recording? It happens each time I start my car in the morning. I have never had an issue for over 6 months now, but could this be a problem?

I used to have this issue but I installed a kill switch so I can turn off the camera whenever I want, especially when parked in my garage overnight. If the car is anywhere but home I leave it on.

You get that error because the car is detecting something is drawing power. When I got that error first thing I checked was the voltage level and my car read 13.12 volts which is above the tolerance level. As long as you have set the cut off voltage on Blackvue it should never dip below it and you should be good. Take that error message as a false positive.
