Any good driving roads in/around Houston?

I moved to Houston a few months ago after spending significant time in LA, SF and NYC. For many years, my weekend escape was to hit a few canyon roads in CA. Although there aren't any canyons here in Houston, I'm hopeful that there are still some drives worth checking out to enjoy a car's handling. Any recs? Thanks!

Definitely curious about this as well. Just took delivery a few weeks ago and 610 traffic just isn't cutting it lol

I have found some decent driving roads through the National Forest, near Conroe/Montgomery/Huntsville. It's not bad for being so close to Houston. Everything else seems to be at least a few hours away.

Unfortunately there's no great driving areas in the immediate area around Houston. There are still some great areas in Texas though if you don't mind driving 2-3 hours, or more if you're up for it. (nothing like the roads some states offer though, but still fun).

I've driven all over the Hill Country (in the links listed above). You'll get stuck behind some slow drivers here and there since they're all 2 lane roads, but it's not too bad if you go during the week. Devil's Backbone is one of my favorite drives out there.

One of my favorite drives ever is way out in West Texas but it's worth it if you ever want to make the road trip. 118 from Alpine to I-10 is awesome. It's about 90 miles if I remember correctly. At one point you're at over 6,000 feet and going through the Davis Mountains. It's a great drive.

I've heard that parts of East Texas have some decent drives too but I haven't ever been over in that area.

The short answer is no there is not. Allen Parkway and Memorial my favorite fast winding roads, but they can be pretty busy.

Talking drive it....

Drive out I-10 to Sealy. Go North on 36. Make a left onto Columbus Road 1094 all the way to New Ulm. Tell me what you see. I lived in Houston from 91 to 93. I had all the fiber optic along the UPRR. Keep going to Freisburg then onto Fayetteville. Go to LaGrange by the cut off if you have some time. 1094 follows the original UPRR from the 1880's. All the rail along Katy Freeway pulled out years ago. I had a lightwave repeater every 25 miles back them. Alot of grass mowing in 100 degree heat. Regen shelters.

I've spent time out in Sealy... When I was with Acme brick we had one of our larger South Texas plants there.

Joining MSR Houston is the only real option. It does not cost much. If you can afford the car you can certainly afford the membership.

Hellyeah! I told you man! It is amazing. I had the telecom, along Union Pacific Railroad/UPRR, from downtown Houston, 293 North Main (tore down) telecom terminal along the Katy Freeway (before it was widened) to Austin/San Antonio. The RR spurs in Smithfield, one leg towards San Antonio, the other Bastrop. Some of the nicest areas in the state. Of course I am stuck in this concrete jungle now. D/FW.

The railroad route is from that late 1800's. Fiber optic ROW/Right of Way. Used to get called out all the time to locate the fiber so they did not dig it up and cut it. Good times. 1991 to 1993. Then Austin. Now that is another story!

Nice blue M4!
