I just picked up a second R7 for the G82. Its just easier to have one for both cars. I still need to install the mirror tap, but, so far, my solution for the detector not shutting off until way after you turn off the car, is, to hit the power button on the actual detector. Then when I get back in the car, it comes on, automatically when you power up the car.

Thanks this did the trick for me for now. I'm not comfortable having it on for 10-15mins after I turn the car off each time…

I just installed mine today and I'm timing it to see how long it stays on. I'll update this with a time once it goes off.

Edit:

Turned car off at 9:36pm
Everything else seemed to go off by 9:46pm
Radar detector turned off at 9:53pm

Looks like 17 minutes for the radar detector to turn off and this is in a G80 xDrive using a Uniden R7 mirror tapped. Hope this helps.

17 minutes. Wow. I'll just be hitting that power button when I get out of the car.

Does it turn off when u turn the car off? I heard some of the red or pink plugs stay on permanently.

I think the vehicle has a proximity sensor, and leaves some things on, or turns things on, when you walk around it. I was noticing just going out to the garage to take the trash out, an hour after I parked it, that I walked by it, and it made some faint noise like something was aware I was there. If this is happening, its going to delay things turning off, I would suspect.

Does it turn off when u turn the car off? I heard some of the red or pink plugs stay on permanently. Not sure, but the plug you tap the MirrorTap into, is black. Since my last post, Ive installed the wiretap. Took all of 10 mintues.

Yep, exactly. It takes a few minutes for the accessories to shut off after the car has been finally locked. If you approach the car, have comfort access turned on, etc, it will turn on accessory power, eg the mirror. I find it works quite well and don't worry about the drain. These batteries are pretty beefy.

Just installed the mirror tap thanks to this thread! Thanks for all the input. If you read through it all, you will be able to install it. I was nervous about breaking some of the plastic tabs, but it all worked and when it clipped back together, it was as good as new. Huge improvement over the springy chord my Valentine came with. Regarding it staying on after you get out of the car, yes, that happens even when plugged into the cig lighter. The G80 leaves it on for 10 mins in my experience, but seems like someone has timed it, lol. I don't mind it being on after I get out of the car and since you can just turn off your detector, I think this is a great solution. My only concern is that people have mentioned that the connector is hot?? That would mean we are overloading that connection...doesn't sound good to me. If anyone has more insight or experience with that, I would appreciate some comments...

My understanding was that members have noticed that the KAFAS camera or whatever connector in that area was hot AF prior to installation.
Probably doesn't have anything to do with the radar detector drawing current, which I think is negligible.

I guess I'm the only idiot who had the mirror tap wire pull apart at the top. Barely touched it once I tapped the plug. Wasn't sure it was in enough and it just snapped off when pushing it in. I guess I could fix it with some tape but it's really small.

Broke one of the taps on mine too. The solder points are trash. I re-soldered it and added a layer of heat shrink tubing to make it more robust. Got the R7 mounted and wired in:

Mirror Tap

I had the same setup (Best Buy Geek Squad install) in my old F22, the radar detector and dash cam stayed on for a few minutes after shutting the car off. I wanted Best Buy to transfer my setup when I traded up to the M3, but they refused to touch it due to liabilities. I went to an install shop that routed the wire to the trunk, now the detector and dash cam both turn on and off with the car.

Is there a way to take the plug out? I'm having a hard time getting a good angle to insert the wire.

Answer is kind of obvious but I wanna make sure…

Battery in the trunk needs to be unplugged before mirror tapping, correct? Doing PCD on the 26th and wanna make sure I bring the appropriate tools to do this install and color matched reflectors in the parking lot of the hotel (or try to anyway haha)

No. If want to be uber safe, pull the fuse for the mirror.

If you haven't gotten it installed, yet, I used needle nose pliers, from a suggestion made from another forum member. I've blendmounted/ mirrortapped at least 6 detectors, and have never even thought to use needle nose. The wire went right in, for me, first try.

Thanks, I'll try that. I broke one of the leads, similar to others in previous posts. I might try to fix it or have a new one sent.

I found it much easier to work on the harness once you remove/slide the mirror assembly off of the windshield.
Simply tilt the whole assembly down and slide it towards the front of the car.
