Break-in service AFTER 1,200 miles?

I see discussions about doing it early but didn't see this discussed anywhere. I am at just over 1,000 miles so far and was wondering if it is better to do it "early" than to do it at, say, 1,300 or 1,400 miles. Is there any guidance out there, or does anyone have any thoughts?

Doing the break-in service beyond 1200 miles can risk losing the warranty on the car, depending on how far beyond. Better to do it early if it's a scheduling issue.

Don’t put it off, BMW doesn’t like it….seriously. I was unable to buy an extended BMW warranty on my F82 M4 because the prior owner who leased it put off the service by like 300-400 miles. I didn’t know this I went to buy the warranty from BMW and they said NO. No way they’d be able to CPO the car then either.

Just get it done on time.

Mine happened after 1200 miles due to the fact that I was on a road trip (500+ miles) to get to the 1200. I asked my SA should I go in before (820-ish miles) or wait till after the trip. At their advice I waited until I returned with 1327 miles.

Just got my car back after the 1200 miles service.

Since I had a trip to Indiana scheduled before I was going to end up with 1500 miles before the service. According to the dealer it didn't matter as long as I was under 2000 miles. After 2000 it'd be an issue.

Just scheduled my break in service via the My BMW app. Very convenient, I assumed I'd have to call them etc. Things have changed quite a bit since I last owned a car that was getting main dealer service

I tried to go in today 1000 miles. Was told they won't do it until at least 1150. Was surprised at this, not sure if new or dealer decision. SA said was not the dealer but who knows.

Maybe 1150 was the minimum engineering spec for the brake in fluid. Who knows?

2,000 Miles

I scheduled break-in on my M3 CS at 900 miles, the dealer did not have the diff fluid available at the time and rescheduled the service. Per two separate service advisors, you’re OK until 2,000 miles. 1,200 is recommended (preferred), 2,000 is maximum before warranty concerns arise.

I'm at 700mi... is that too early? M4 Comp is two months old.

Yes it is. At this rate, schedule it for a month from now so they can make sure they have the fluids.

Everything seems to take a least a month to get if it isn't in stock.

While you're waiting, be sure your dealer has differential fluid in stock. It shouldn't be an issue now but it was this time last month. My dealer had it back-ordered for two full months (different fluids for different xDrive differentials) till it came in 3 weeks ago.

Resurrecting this thread for any other input/opinions. Tried to schedule an appt for next week and then dealership called and said they were backed up to eternity and can't get me in until the 24th.

I'm currently at ~1100 miles and usually put about 40 miles a day on my car commuting and driving. I'll estimate being around 1800 miles by the time they can get me... maybe ~1600 if I'm very conservative, switch up my routine a bit, and ask my wife to drive on joint ventures.

Is there any hard documentation for warranty issues or is it all word of mouth? Plan on keeping the car so I'm not too worried about resale issues

I’ve seen 2 posts on this forum. First guy claimed that he didn’t get the break-in service done before the 1200 mile mark on his new F80 and when he went to buy the vehicle at the end of his lease they wouldn’t sell him the extended warranty and claimed it was voided by him missing the 1200 mile service. Today I saw a second guy post his service advisor said “Do not miss the break in service” other than that, I know of no other issues. I guess it is all dependent if you plan to buy extended warranty at the end of your lease, if you keep your vehicle.

I'm financing and don't plan on doing extended warranty. Guess it will be what it is :
