Daily Drivers, Winter Tire Options?

I'm debating splurging on an M3, but it'd be my daily driver. I live in MI we get snow, though mostly 2" or less these days. What do you guys who DD your cars run for tires/wheels in the winter?

I checked Tire Rack but don't want to spend $4k on winter wheels/tires. I could run something like an Extremecontact DWS HP A/S tire on the OEM base 18/19 wheels. Thoughts?

Im outside Philadelphia and car is coming in January. Was kind of unexpected as I was able to get someone else's build and that worked for me, so I didn't have a chance to get a winter setup when I'm assuming more were available. I think for this year I'm gonna out the dws06 on the stock wheels, swap back to summer when it warms up, and then get a winter wheel and tire set for next year. I also won't be driving within less than two days after any significant snow event has ended, I work from home, and my wife has an suv so I'm thinking I'll be ok this year.

Interested to hear others experiences.

I live in the Cherry Capital and just got an M4 for my DD. As posted elsewhere, I mounted Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 tires (275/35R19s) on four matching 825M rims (9.5" x 19", as in fronts). I snagged the tires back in August/September; now they're hard to find (though allegedly Costco still has some).

What wheels size options fit with the M brakes? And what tire size options would work on a stock wheel? Could you put a 255/265 combo on stock wheels safely?

read the winter tire thread. there's many options discussed there. I just got 19x9.5 square VMR wheels and having Costco install PA5s on them.

I'm currently on all seasons on the 18/19's in SW MI. So far it's been ok but I'm not sure it's really going to work out.

CONTINENTAL EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 PLUS SL

So far they've been ok but I wouldn't dream of pushing my luck with my right foot if it's at all icy or snowy on the road. That's very clear

I'm hoping I can at least get to next season before having to buy a set of rims if these don't really work.

I just bought Michelin Pilot A/S 4 and plan to run them year-round. Natch I live in NC so our winters are nothing like yours, and generally if we get snow all the schools and businesses close. I have no experience with them in the snow, but they are a very capable tire for year-round use.

You could just save the OE tires and have them remounted every spring and swapped in the late fall. It's a PITA, but a lot cheaper than buying a spare set of wheels.

Thanks for the info. What size tires did you get? At least for the first season I'd swap tires, not sure after that.

Where did you purchase the 4 front 825Ms?

From my local dealer. I get a decent discount on parts, so the sting wasn't so bad for just a pair of rims.

All dealers around me were back-ordered 3 months when I was looking a month ago.

Yikes! I ordered my rims in early August (before I had a production number), and they arrived within a week. The parts manager was cool with storing them (boxed) for as long as my car took to arrive.

That's what I should have done. Ordered as soon as I got my prod#. It worked out though. Pretty happy with the VSR wheels for winters.
