Wanted to do a Trunk Install the SST but not much resources out there reg the same. Most of the issues come with trying to pop the rubber grommet and different techniques. I saw a lot of people doing so many variants of it that thought I could do a simpler one. If you use a flat head screw driver and a needle nose pliers to grab it, you can easily pull it out from the trunk side and took me like 30 secs. I tried to get a video but my kid didn’t get the angle correct lol. I did attach the video here.

I fed the wires through each side and was able to get it done. The wires on the SST controller connector plugs r pretty flimsy. I used electrical tape and secured them and then did use zip ties to secure them in place.

I cut a slit into the grommet and a small hole using a utility knife and tried to put them back the way it came from the factory and it was near to impossible. I tried going from underneath but alas I dropped the grommet into the plastic water guards and game over. After trying to unscrew the water guards I gave up. I used some duct tape around the opening to cover up the side. For the other side I flipped the grommet with the outside part facing in and it was so much easy to slide it back in. I used some electrical tape to cover the slit and it’s set in pretty good. So for anyone out there looking to do trunk install instead of passing it through the heat shield this is much easier and cleaner once u figure out the grommets. Good luck

Nice install. That’s how I installed mine. I used silicon on the rubber garments.

Most of our issues aren't how to get the grommet out, it's that our grommets are either missing (it's completely sealed with no cutouts), or they're these non-removable plastic ones that are sprayfoam sealed from the other side.

That's where you'd need the drill or any more forceful techniques.

It would be dead simple if we all had your grommet setup.

There is a video out there to just drill a hole into the spray foam/plastic block to feed the wires. Thats more simpler than removing these grommets. You just use a drill bit and make a hole. There r so many ways to remove the grommet push it from underneath, make an X, make a star shaped cut etc but no real videos on how to remove them. If u mess up, they fall into the plastic reservoir never to be seen again. So its easier with the foam block than these grommets.

Same method I did for mine, I used 3m double sided vs velcro and some foil tape to cover up around the grommets. My 24 comp xdrive had both sides and already open as well.

This is super easy if you have the grommets. I installed mine in about 20 minutes

I installed it the same way. I have my driver grommet… the passenger grommet got pushed through and I couldn’t get it back. I currently just left it unsealed. Should I put some tape to cover the hole back? If so, should I use electrical tape or would any tape do? If I don’t, will water get through or something? Thank you!

Since its so close to the wheel well, I would cover it. Electrical tape is too narrow but the duct tape is pretty wide. You could put a slit through the tape and keep the wire in the middle and then apply more layers around it like I did. Since the hole is pretty big, silicone might be hard o fill unless u have a small plastic piece to cover it. You could also try spray foam which might do the job but pretty messy

No. If you pull the grommet from the trunk side using the needle nose pliers, you dont have to remove any panels from underneath. U just push the wires through and pull them from the underneath. When u reinstall the grommet, make sure u flip it with the wider side facing the trunk. Otherwise its really hard to reinstall it and might drop into the stupid water reservoir like mine

if the grommet drops in the black box yes it's annoying but it's literally held in with 3 rubber fasteners, it takes about 5 minutes to completely remove and re-install it. Not really the end of the world

Which 3 fastners are u referring to. I removed the screws holding the heat shield and the nut holding them both and still wasnt able to pry it open. I didnt wanna bend the heat shield any further and gave up. There is more to it than the 3 rubber fastners as its screwed to the heat shield too.

I think this is the piece we r talking about right

If this is where you'd be trying to get into, you can easily get to it by removing the rear wheel inner liner. The opposite side is completely open at that point.

In the photo you can see the 3 standoffs where it mounts to the chassis under the car, once you’ve removed those 3 fasteners you should be able to wiggle it out. It’s been quite a while since I installed mine so it’s not exactly fresh in my mind but i definitely dropped one of my grommets in there and was able to get it out without any problems.
