BMW should offer a second set of winter wheels/tires at a reasonable price on all their summer tired cars and get buyers to sign off on a waiver if they do not take them. Surprised they don't for liability purposes. A buddy of mine in Canada bought an X3 with summer tires included and nobody told him about it. Two months later the weather turns and off the road he goes. Nobody hurt but the car was totaled and he was completely shaken. Last edited by hooked; 02-25-2024 at 07:42 AM.. |

Firstly, glad you are ok. That’s the main thing.
However, I find it hard to believe ‘black ice’ is to blame here. How many others crashed in the same spot the same night? It hasn’t been that cold in the North East the last few days at all Driving too fast for the conditions more likely Winter tires might not have saved you if it was genuine black ice or you were driving too fast for the conditions I have a RWD M3, in the North East. These cars are fine in winter with the right tires and the right driving style but any car will not survive the winter if driven inappropriately on incorrect tires I ran winters the first winter, more recently I’ve ran summers but only use the car when the conditions permit. If the conditions are poor, I take my SUV. I know not everyone has that luxury and in that case, you need to swap on to winter tires Cheap lesson in the end I think. You made it out alive thank god |

Temps in NYC can hit 30-50 in a span of a few hours. I've had no issues driving with summers in the winter in NYC as long as day time temperature is greater than 40. If it is less, the car stays home. If the highest day time temperature in your city is <30F, I'd get winters. NYC you can do without as long as you are sensible. |

I’m not disagreeing for one minute winter tyres aren’t a good idea. You decided to imply I made a statement that was untrue, that pisses me off just so you know where I’m coming from. Scotland has spells of severe winter conditions and arguably on par with the US areas in question. So my point all along is drive to the conditions, that’s exactly what 99% of people here do in the winter using the same tyres all year round. Anyway, the point was not to beat up the OP for his mistake, shit happens and is anyone commenting on his mistake perfect. No.

OP, this isn't normal dude. Glad you're OK but not sure you should be driving, you're going to kill someone.

“Done wrapped the M4 around a telephone pole I looked at my car and I said, "oh brother".I'll throw it in the gutter, and go buy another…”
Now you can get the LCI!

I hope the driver of the white M4 is doing ok. The car can be replaced!
There is no way I would drive a Porsche or a BMW in New York City regardless of the weather! I have GEICO and I don't even drive my M4 Comp in the rain or at night. If it's not Sunny Southern California weather, the M4 will stay in the Garage. |

Glad to hear OP is okay. Certainly sucks but at least the car is replaceable.
For all you nonbelievers out there thinking summer tires are okay year round, here’s an article straight from Michelin regarding it. |

There’s quite a bit of compromise in braking on snow, but feel they do the job in the Northeast US where the original poster is located. |

Hey G82Anxious. So sorry about your toy. The main thing is that you are ok. While we all know you love your car. It is material and replaceable. Time to take a break, regroup and plan for the next toy. But the main thing is that you are ok and the car protected you. Hang in there and be safe.
