Depends on your driving style and what you intend to do. You can keep yourself occupied by either spending a lot of money with mods or join a local car club and get into some events. Myself, i do tend to stick to the speed limits about 80% and the 20% when the traffic is light and in sparsely populated roads, will let loose. I also plan on doing beginner courses on tracks ( just to let the car loose) and visit some areas with winding roads so ai can enjoy this car more. Its all about what you would like to do. It will be a shame have a M car and not putting that S58 engine to the test sometimes

I was thinking maybe the 6 MT would keep things more fun long term even though the Comp is faster? I haven’t had a manual in many years so hard to remember. But from what I remember, the manual shifting goes on autopilot also where I’m not really thinking about it so that loses its novelty also.

Everything's fast these days and the manual and competition Gs are no exception. Hard to use the power of most cars today without getting into trouble. I think the manual for myself does help to keep me more engaged on days where I'm in traffic or in areas I can't do much. Everyday though no matter I absolutely love this car. I can take it easy and cruise comfortably on a road trip or I can take it down a gear and hit a corner with a smile. This car really is dual purpose built. It's amazing.
Moral of the story? Just buy it. Auto or manual.

Currently all the cars i have are fast. My daily is a model 3 long range with AB. That's good for an 11.7-11.9 in the 1/4 and there's even a video of a long range beating the performance in a roll race lol. Not sure how but that's what it is. It's a very quick car for a daily and the immediacy of torque is what makes driving so satisfying. I just meant that the M3 isn't as raw. There's a thread that talks about the same thing, how to make the M3 feel more raw. And he has the manual version so he's more "engaged" than us auto guys. The M3/M4 are amazing cars. Very very easy to go fast and they're still practical. But if you're dailying the car, i would assume it gets boring very quick. I only use my M3 from time to time. I got it to be a secondary toy to my C7Z, which feels very raw in comparison but i honestly don't drive the M much. Not that i don't like it, i do. I just don't love it. I know it'll be incredible on the track if i did that but street driving, it's a very numb experience most of the times.

To solve this problem I tracked it. Once you find its limits and take the car to it a few times then driving “within the limits” becomes more enjoyable because I don’t feel like I am missing something. To me these cars are anything but boring. I enjoy driving at 50 through twisty backroads as much as 140 on a back straight.

didn't read all the responses but i will say ANY auto car i've owned got boring within a few months. Auto is much better for the track, but for normal everyday driving the manual keeps it much more engaging and fun

I have multiple toys. I felt like if I daily’ed my g80 I’d get even more bored. Because a car like this belongs on a track or at least spirited driving often. You can’t do that with this car imo, at least not as a daily. An ev is satisfying for the commute which is what makes it entertaining Monday-Friday. G80 is a toy.

When you get bored, time for a mod. When you run out of mods, time for new car. Don't do all your mods at once. |

I like the “boring” aspect of it. From a daily perspective I drive it normally in comfort to do errands or commute to work. I don’t want it to have to be involving all the time. On weekends when I’m in the canyons or track with settings in sport+, that’s where it opens up and I push it a bit more. I sort of see it as a two way car. Refined and great for normal stuff and then if I want I can make it more involved or thrilling with a push of a button.

Here's another vote for the manual. No regrets.

However, it is still waaaayyy more engaged than any Automatic/DCT. Not better, not worse, but more engaged and for some of us still the only way to have these cars. Last one I tried to like with the 8AT was an awesome M340i. Loved it first 2 weeks, wanted to love it the following 4.5 months, hated it (could not wait to get out of it) last 3 months... So, I am sticking with the third pedal as long as they are letting me to |

Idk, I had a juke and that was decidedly not interesting or fun at all, you could certainly wring it’s neck... but all it would do is cry. I haven’t had mine that long, but the car is just damn beautiful alone. I take a lot of enjoyment out of that fact even when not pushing it. I did get Atlantis Metallic though, and that certainly helps. I love looking at it from behind with those big hips and that color. It’s different in different lighting. Although, sometimes lol… sometimes the exhaust does seem a little large from the back ha ha, but I don’t mind. I think I get as much enjoyment from seeing it as I do driving it. |

As for driving it, upgrading the exhaust helped a bunch with the enjoyment. Makes the spirited drives way more fun. Coming from a 6spd F87 M2C, I do feel it was more enjoyable and I do miss it. The G80 is incredibly capable though, sometimes I wish I would have gotten the manual. Being in Chicago, I wanted the xdrive for winter. It does get boring at times. I'm not a big fan of its size, not so much the weight, but its size in general. I went from E46 M3 --> F87 M2C --- G80 M3, so the size and wheelbase was the biggest adjustment for me. I thought G80 would be my forever car, but I think if they come out with a G87 M2CS, that will be most likely what I'll get next.... or look at some 718 Caymans, those GT4s are still way over sticker though...

As others have said, drive this car the way it was meant to be driven when you have the opportunity and you will love and appreciate this car for what it's for. I learned this lesson in my Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio, and again in an F80. Find time to open up the throttle. Make the time for a track day, even if its only once. Learn what this car is capable of and drive her right up to her limits. To me, that's what builds the human/car relationship.
