Last but not least, one article mentioned the BMW following him had Washington plates: Just assume any luxury car with out of state plates from way far away is probably stolen if the driver doesn't match the vehicle. It's kind of like spotting a fake Rolex, they say it's more about the person than the watch.
I had a car following me a few night s ago. I was sure it was following me, so I let the car catch up and as soon as I knew I could make a sharp right turn and he would not be able to without hitting the brakes hard, I put my foot down and made the turn. WOOOO WOOOO WOOOOO WOOOOO lights blaring.

Montana is right in the middle. I doubt there is any correlation to gun ownership.

I followed this thread feeling really good that I don't worry about my car being stolen based on where we live.
Then I saw where my state was listed.

Surprised DC is up there in rates meanwhile the TriState area is lower than I expected it to be.

These stats are for per 100k inhabitants and not per cars registered so therefore skewed!

More people per family own cars in a state like Montana vs. DC for example. Most families don’t even own a car in Manhattan where there is hardly steet parking and garage rates are $1000 a month.

It wasn’t a DUH statement, it was DOH, as in Homer Simpson. He was sympathizing with you, not mocking you.

There looks to be at some some possible correlation. Six of the top ten states listed there have pretty restrictive firearms laws, and given that only about twelve states total have those kinds of restrictions, having half show up in the top ten is at least intriguing. Since roughly 38 states have permissive firearms laws, it stands to reason you'll see them all over the place in the chart.

However, there are certainly issues with this data analysis, especially the point posted earlier that this is calculated on a per person basis, and not per vehicle registered.

About the only definitive point one could pull from this is that there are likely some hyperlocal factors at play, so one could say this chart is a starting point for further analysis.

On the other hand, there are definite regional trends, such as a higher incidence in the west compared to the northeast. That could make sense since cars tend to last longer out west, meaning that there are a lot of older cars on the road that are also easier to steal.

Colorado at the top is rather bizarre, but seeing DC at number two is not surprising at all to me actually.

Try checking numbers at city/county level. Chicago had over 21,000 car thefts last year. That’s in a city of 2.6M.

Glad he let you go. I suppose better the police than some bad dudes looking to steal the car I guess. Did the officer say why he was following?
