992 GT3 Owner, thinking about ordering a G80 without any test drive?
Hey guys, hope you're all doing well! Current owner of a 2022 992 GT3. I've been driving the hell out of this car, currently at 10.5k miles.
The look of the G80 has been growing on me lately despite my initial distaste for the front grilles. I'm currently stuck at home for the next few months recovering from a transplant and I was thinking about ordering an individual G80 to use as a daily driver for when it eventually arrives. Only thing is, I've never sat in/test driven one. Would it be stupid to order one with the carbon buckets having never been in one? I'm assuming I'll love the car when I eventually get it but I just wanted to hear the thoughts of some actual G80 owners to see what you guys think. Since I can't leave my house for a few months I'd want to order the car now rather than waste those few months. Obviously I know these forums are for G8x owners so opinions will be biased, but just thought I'd post here anyways. Thanks for reading! |

If you are keeping the 992gt3 a better way to complement it is a g83 m4 with standard seats. You will absolutely love it.

Follow up question for anyone who happens to see this thread: Is there no upgraded sound system option for the M3? Disappointed to see it only comes with an HK system. Guess I'll have to do an upgraded sound system along with the other things I have planned...

What don't you like about the HK system? You said you have never driven a G80. Have you ever heard an HK system?

I've had other cars (including BMW) with the HK system before. No M's though. Honestly I just really prefer to have a nice sounding system in any car I drive because I always have music on. But you're absolutely right, I haven't heard them in the G80 so I might be overthinking things a bit. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

If you have the buckets in your gt3 and you are comfortable with them, order the buckets without seeing them because they are more comfortable and more adjustable, the G80 BMW nailed it with ride quality, you can daily it and live with it everday for long journeys even with the buckets, its just little hard to get in and out of them but not that big deal when you get use to them, the gt3 is hard to live with it as a daily car because ride quality is harsh and not practical, gooo with the G80 not the G82, for me it looks better and more practical.
Ive had it for almost a year now, car size is perfect, interior specially with the buckets is amazing, insanely fast even when stock, ride quality is amazing, name me a better sedan than can tik almost every box! except the M5cs thats a different beast. |

I've not driven a 992 GT3 but driven plenty of 991 GT3's and have owned 997 and 991 911's. You will love the G80 as a daily. You'll love the abundance of torque compared to your GT3. Still very quick but not nearly as much effort to get to the power as an NA Flat 6. Last edited by Needsdecaf; 08-15-2023 at 07:27 AM.. |

The buckets complicate matters a bit, but I think a lot of us have bought a G8X without a test drive given the market in recent years.

As a daily, I'd forgo the buckets. They are a royal PITA to exit and enter. Worse than the Porsche buckets, because the bolsters on the side are even higher and the wheel is closer (in my case for sure).
It's a daily. Get the sofas. You have a GT3 for the sportiness. It's not like the base seats are going to let you flop around in spirited driving. |

I would recommend testing out the carbon buckets before ordering.
I didn’t get a chance to see the carbon buckets in person or sit in them but still ordered them. Nearly two years later, I still love the carbon buckets, however I have grown tired of the ingress/egress of them. You get used to the ingress/egress that comes with them but nearly two years later I’m just kind of done with it. Can’t really get in or out of the car with items in your hand, it’s even worse in tight parking space, etc. I suppose if you don’t care about wear and tear on the buckets this is less of a problem but if you dont’ want the buckets to look like shit within a few months you’ll need to take some extra care getting in and out.

From a BMW/Porsche nut:
I am disappointed with the HK system in my G80 M3CX. It's a bit better than a Macan's Bose system, but not as good as a 911 Turbo or Taycan Bose system. Never tried a Cayenne to test the sound, and the road noise is too high in a GT3 to really judge (or care about) the quality of the Bose in it. I thought my previous HK systems were better in my M2C and M240ix. I just can't find a good EQ setting in the M3. It sounds muddy and unnatural. Compared to Burmester: unfortunately the M3's HK isn't anywhere close to being as nice as my Macan's Burmester sound, but that was a costly option (and I would have paid for that level of audio quality in the M3 if available). The Burmester I left EQ'ed flat, and everything sounded good through it. The M3's I have EQed all over the place and still can't decide which sounds most acceptable. Also, to help you with seats: I've had 2 GT cars with the buckets and now a 992 GT3 with 6MT with standard seats. Ordered those on purpose. No regrets. M3's buckets are harder to get in and out of compared to the Porsche buckets, especially since it's a 4-door with a B pillar right in the way of your body making it hard to get out (never mind the giant side bolsters and middle piece). However, they are comfier to sit in compared to Porsche buckets since they are adjustable. I went with the sport seats and that's what I recommend as well for this car. I would say if you are getting a stick shift and driving a lot, it makes the decision even easier: forego the buckets. For more context and insight on my opinion on whether you will like the M3: I've become a bit anti-Porsche recently due to pricing and because I find that everything GTS-and-less is a bit underwhelming. The 992 GT3 and Turbo/S are the only 911s I consider anymore. Compared to those, you will find that the M3 is a bit dull in comparison, but feels more exciting that a 911 S or even a GTS. The GT3, on the other hand, has a wild engine. Nothing matches that thing revving to those rpms. Now, that's not to say that you won't like the M3... It's very fast, a lot of fun (especially in RWD mode), and does a lot more than a 911 since you get rear seats, a trunk, and AWD if you get the comp. It's fun in RWD mode. Great in the rain too. If you are keeping both, go ahead and order the M3 without a test drive, you will not be disappointed with the way it drives. I'd be curious to hear your (or others') thought on the HK compared to other vehicles. I may just be overly critical having come from a Burmester system in my previous DD, but I swear, something is missing from the M3's HK system.

got a 991.2gt3 (my 5th porsche) w buckets. love them. but the m3x is one of my DDs now, and I got the regular seats. I wasn't able to test drive it when I ordered it because there were none around.
it's zippy; the throttle and steering are very light and it moves. GT porsches' steering and throttle are more deliberate and more linear. the m3 is a bit spongey, and since you can change them in the id8 and on the fly, it's hard to develop muscle memory. but for a DD with gusto, it's hard to go wrong. the other DD is a Macan Turbo. |

Muddy and unnatural is the name of the game when you take a 2-channel source and smash it through processing and too many channels to simulate multi-channel sound. Other companies may do it better than HK, but the only way I can be happy with the sound in my G80 is to keep the "surround" OFF. It's bad enough that the center channel is still active, but some time spent matching your EQ settings in non-surround mode with your ears and your music source, as well as balancing the sound to your seat a bit (I wish we had actual timing control instead of balance...grr...), and it can be made to be OK, which my M2C could not manage at all without significant hardware upgrades. Stereo sound should be played in stereo, not 5.1 or 7.1. |

G80 (M3) is definitely a way to go and keep the 992 GT3.
I just picked up a G80 for daily and saving my 992 as a weekender. Take care & wishing you a speedy recovery.
