key fob battery ran out in 8 months

i've had at least 7 new BMWs in the last 10 years. I've never once replaced a key fob battery (once kept a car for almost 3 years!). My 22 M4 is now saying low battery on the key fob 8 months into ownership (and about 8k miles)

is this normal? does this car draw more battery than previous cars? just wondering or maybe i just had a crappy battery

The battery drain might be because the key is too close to your car. I forgot the distance, but if it's too close it constantly communicates with the car which drains the battery.

If that's the case try keep the key further away from the car when not it in use.

I actually had a dash message hold key near ignition

I'll check it agin…

I go for my 1200 mile service Friday. I'll have them replace the key fob battery.

Exactly my experience with our G05 X5; keep the key(s) at least 10' from the vehicle, so they both 'go to sleep'. Also, store the key in a stationary spot (not a drawer), so it's not inadvertently awakened. Be sure the replacement battery is a quality name brand not the least-cost option available online. There is a huge difference in battery life.

Ask me how I know ....
