Hey all, I currently own a 2023 F97 X3M(Non comp), but have the opportunity to pick up a very well maintained and low mileage 2022 M3CX. My F97 isn’t my daily(and the G80 wouldn’t be either)and only has 7500 miles. I initially placed a deposit on a new G80 build last year but the long wait time made me reconsider and I ended up with a new F97.

The 2022 G80 has ~9000 miles, 1 owner, and full maintenance records. It was purchased at my local dealer, and was a local car. Warranty is important to me, so I wouldn’t lose anything by switching from a 2023 to a 2022 that I know of. I likely wouldn’t keep it for more than two years.

Anyone make the switch from an F97 to a G80, or any words of wisdom on switching in terms of ride quality(never had an issue with the X3M like some do with ride quality), general usefulness as a sedan, ect.

This would be a fun weekend car for road trips, date nights and spirited driving. I know the X platform is a rocket ship of a car.

I also don’t *need* an suv, as my wife drives one as well and my daily is a company truck.


Thanks in advance! I feel like this deal may be too hard to pass up. The 2022 is Skyscraper gray with Fiona interior.

Not sure of numbers yet. Will know more today but they are asking $~81k for the M3. This potential deal entirely depends on what they’ll give me for the X3M and if they’ll budge any on the G80.

No idea how your F97 is optioned. I traded my 22 X3MC in 2 months ago and I got 68k. It was optioned with Driver Asssist Pro, Executive Package, Park Assit, M Drivers package, etc. MSRP was 88k. The car had 9k miles on it when I traded it in. It was perfect cosmetically but had a mid pipe, Dinan exhaust, and RKTunes intake. Maybe I could have gotten 70 without the mods as dealers always likes to punish you for mods. I’m thinking I could have gotten 72-75k for a private sale if I found someone who wanted the mods I had. One of our members here purchased it from the dealer. Not sure what he paid but the dealer had it up for 72k on their lot. My guess is he paid 70ish.

You said about 81k for the M3MC? This is a tough one as how it is optioned can make a pretty big difference. You can figure a loss of about 20% of the original MSRP. If this was a 97k MSRP I think 81 is in the ballpark.

Everyone’s deals are different and the above is just my opinion based on the current market. Knowing what your options are on the F97 and the G80 would help some.

There are always those who will say “the dealer ripped you off” or “I got a new M3 for 82k” so just keep that in mind. You could say you got 20% off MSRP and some would say they did better. The important part is that you feel it was a fair deal.

I can tell you going from a F97 to a G82 was great for me. No longer have children in our home and I no longer need an SAV. I prefer the G82 at this point in my life but there are some downsides. My biggest one is getting out is more difficult. Probably because I’m old and fat but also because we have 2 cars in or garage and I can’t open the door fully

Go for it! The M3 is a great sedan, the ride is surprisingly good for an M car, and the overall performance, handling, etc. is worlds better than the X3.

If warranty is important enough then I would just find an allocation for a new build from a broker (you can find them fairly easily through them) for a smaller finder's fee.

If you had no issues with your F97 ride, you'll think the M3 is like floating on a cloud compared lol.

The G80 is a great car, but maybe you can also consider a G82/G83 if you like the coupe/convertible styling? Those are much easier to find allocations for.

I appreciate all of the info! Good to know about the ride. My F97 doesn’t bother me or my wife at all, but the ride quality of the platform is all over the F97 forums which is funny, so good to know that the ride of the G80 would be great. I’m leaning more towards the G80 rather than an M4 for the simple fact of having a sedan. We use it for road trips, and occasionally hauling friends or family so not losing the practicality that my F97 has is important to me.

Regarding the warranty and new vs used, I’d prefer new, but the warranty doesn’t really concern me on this particular G80 and the fact that it’s a 2022 vs 2023. It has a build date of 6/2022 so it would have full warranty through 6/2025.

Warranty should be 4 years, so if it's 6/2022, you should have it through '26, or up to 50k miles.

That being said, if you're ok with the options, mileage, and colors, go for it. You'll love it. If it's a '22 it also still has iDrive 7, so that'll be familiar to you. '23 and newer G80s have iDrive 8.

Great points. If I were going to order one, I would choose the color combos that this one has(skyscraper, Fiona interior, red calipers).

It has exec pack, shadow headlights, black 826 wheels, wireless charging, and parking assistance package. I wouldn’t have ordered the carbon buckets, or ceramic brakes ect so it’s a spec I’d have chosen anyway. Only thing it doesn’t have that I would have ordered are laser lights.

I mean, financials aside, this trade is a no brainer. You already have an SUV and a company truck, you have no need for the X3M in your life. The G80 will be better for what you are looking for it to do. Fun weekend car, road trips, date nights and spirited driving the lower weight and COG will certainly be more enjoyable than the X3M.

I think all you need to do is evaluate if it makes financial sense. But as for use case, this is as close to a no-brainer as it gets.

Laser lights are a fairly big bummer to not have IMO. They really improve the look of the front end. Functionality-wise, you can take it or leave it (you *can* code in the anti-dazzle functionality as well). If you can get over not having it, I wouldn't be worried, just don't expect to be able to retrofit them, the lights are expensive lol.

Agree! Thanks for the reply. I’ve owned M3’s before. I had an absolute gem of an E46 years ago and loved it as a weekend car.

I thought about a new C8, but there is no practicality for a road trip with that. I test drove one and saw the luggage space. I know how my wife packs for a trip so that’s totally out of the question. 😂

You’re right, I have a four door full size truck that I daily that I can take on trips/weekend use as needed as well so I really don’t need an SUV.

They are working on some numbers. If they make sense, I think I’d love a G80. I’d put around 7k miles a year on it, so even after 2024 going into 2025 it would only have ~16k on it.

Here’s a development. The deal may actually work numbers wise, I’ll officially know tomorrow. I have Comp wheels on my X3M, but want to keep them and sell them. I can take the non comp 21’s from my X3M in the trunk, but will the comp wheels fit in the trunk/backseat of the G80?

I assume they will, but I figured some of you have transported rims(no tires) in your G80’s.

Looking forward to potentially joining the M3 forums.

If the car's an exact match for what you'd order, then it sounds like a great move.

On the other hand, you have time on your side and could have a brand new M3 built to your specs in a couple months.
