BM3 Flex Fuel Kit - Problems after install

Hey guys,

I got my ECU back from Femto on Thursday, put it back in the car last night, and today I wired in the BM3 Flex Fuel kit in the engine bay.

I followed these instructions, although not directly for the G8x chassis cars because it was performed on a Supra, I did what I could as closely as possible and followed the wiring instructions to a tee.
https://bootmod3.atlassian.net/wiki/...n+Instructions

After reconnecting the battery, the hazards were on immediately. They're flashing, but the button on the dash isn't flashing and it doesn't do anything when you press it.

To make matters worse, the main display has no power going to it. It doesn't power on when the central display does. I started the car and it ran, no fuel was leaking, but I have no idea why the flashers are on or why the main display has no power.

Has anyone had this issue? I'm on a G87, but figured I'd post here because there are more of you guys who probably installed BM3 Flex Fuel Kits.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. My car is just dead in the garage until I can get this figured out.

I didn't see where you said that after you installed the ECM you started it, or flashed it, or drove it around before messing with the flex kit. Did you?

I haven't yet flashed the car. I wanted to get it started and make sure there were no leaks before moving forward. I haven't driven it at all yet. I was really nervous about fuel leaking. I guess my fear was misplaced.

I would disconnect the flex sensor and revisit all the ecm connections, including the ones around the ECM that come off. disconnect the negative and remove and replace each connector. see if the car works before you hook up the flex sensor.

I'll try this. Thank you.

Edit: Car is back to normal with a CEL on now.

I disconnected all the wiring for the BM3 Flex Fuel Kit and returned it to stock. Hazards came on when I reconnected the battery, but the drivers display was on and the button for the hazards was flashing. I pressed it and they turned off.

I let the car run for a minute and the CEL never went away. Turned it off and just left it. Before I start messing with it again I want to find some more information.

I’ve been messing with cars for 30 years. For me it’s best practice to change one thing at a time and make sure that works before moving forward. Sounds like you installed the ECU and the flex sensor at the same time and didn’t verify that the ECU was all good first.

I would unplug everything again and start from scratch.
Verify the ECU works. Drive the car, and make sure there are no CEL before moving on to something else.

Also, since you have the ECU unlocked you can run codes and find out what is triggering the CEL

I haven't flashed the car yet, so I can't see the codes in BM3. Do you think I should flash it now?

No don’t flash until you have the running right as it did stock.

I would connect everything back to stock. Then open BM3 (do not flash). Read codes using the app. If that doesn’t work you can download BimmerLink and that can read codes.

Check all connections to the ECU. A friend of mine had bent pins on his. He was able to straighten them out.

I did this. I removed all the wiring for the flex fuel sensor last night and returned the BDC to stock.

Everything is normal again other than the CEL.

I'm sorry, I'm new to this so I may be using the wrong terminology. I'm trying to be accurate in the descriptions I'm using. I don't know if "flash" is the right word for the first time you connect.

I have no yet connected the car to my laptop. I haven't registered the car with Bootmod3. I have an activation key. Should I connect it and register it? Or should I try to get the code cleared first? I have to connect it before Bootmod3 will show the car in the app.

use bm3 to clear the code, its normal to have a code after disconnecting and reconnecting the ECM, etc.

I used BimmerCode to clear the code. Once I ran it for a while and was convinced there was nothing wrong, I connected the car to my computer and was able to connect to bootmod3 and I flashed the car with a customROM stock map.

I'm not scared to mess with the flex fuel kit's wiring. I'm trying to seek some professional help.

There were dozens of codes. Everything was a stored code for something electrical related. I should have screenshotted it.

Very well could have pinned the BM3 wires to the wrong wire. If the car runs and acts fine with the DME in then it is most likely wiring on the flex

I thought you had to register the VIN by applying BM3 BEFORE sending off the ECU for a custom-flash.

You either miswired something or plugged in the blue BM3 harness in wrong or reversed. It may not be keyed, so the video for the S58 around the 8 minute mark tells you the orientation and around the 8:20 mark is where it tells you the additional steps for the power (key/ignition on) source hookup and what harness plugs that got moved to on the G series chassis. You may need to go back and very carefully watch this section of the video to understand it 100% before attempting again. I bet you either skipped around or missed a step or didn’t hook something up or even reversed the pinouts somehow and that caused all your problems. MAKE SURE YOU’RE WATCHING THE CORRECT VIDEO.

I went down there this morning after talking with ProTuningFreaks. I feel like I did the exact same thing I did last time, except no issues this time around.

I took the car for a drive, let everything get up to temp, hit boost a few times to check for fuel leaks, everything is good to go.

The in dash ethanol readout is saying 10% ethanol which is right for the Shell 93 that's in the car now.

I still don't know what I did to cause that issue, but it's all good now.

Hopefully I can get my maps from GTP soon so I can start having some fun with this thing before it snows tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who commented and helped out.

You send the ECU off to get unlocked so BM3 can be applied to it. If you try to connect BM3 before sending it out you'll brick the ECU.

I purchased the license before sending it out and my VIN was sent to ProTuningFreaks, but I never connected the car to my computer or BM3 on my phone until it was back from Finland.

This is the proper way to do it as per BM3/Femto's instructions, allthough some have reported success without registering. Registering in advance only takes a few minutes.

There's no risk of corrupting the DME during the registration process.

+1 This is what I did and all went seamlessly.
