Update:
The sound does not come from the prop shaft or the differential. They replaced both. Now they are replacing the transfer case. Hopefully next week Its done. Meanwhile I’m enjoying an x5 loaner.

oh wow. I wonder if they put the Loctite when putting the driveshaft on. The splines need the Loctite or it will create this clunking sound.

Once applied it needs to set for 3-4 hours and the car cannot be pushed or moved off the lift (or even dropped down) otherwise the loctite will break and not set correctly.

Some shops/dealers do this, most do not. The ones that do - have to follow it 100% and allow it to set for the 3-4 hours otherwise if it is moved within that period then applying the Loctite is useless and will not give the benefit.

Its explained here under SI B26 01 18 :

https://bmwrepairguide.com/sib/260118.pdf

It doesn't call our the G8x or even the F9x (X3M/X4M) however it IS the root of the clunks.

Thanks for the advice, I actually printed this out and gave it to them in the beginning.

They actually did do the loctite 2x (propshaft and diff was replaced separately. I don’t know if they dropped the car, but they waited until it’s dry. They explained it to me on the phone, how they were done, but needed to wait in order to try it out. It was always sitting overnight because they usually finished around 4pm.

If changing the transfer case doesn’t solve the problem, then bmw is sending someone from M gmbh over to take a look.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

my car is ready for pickup.
Clunk = transfer case.
Now I have a new rear diff, new prop shaft and transfer case. OMG.

am pretty happy now and have to do a compulsory 2000km roadtrip on the weekend. Destination unknown.

It took almost 3mths to have it sorted.

Thanks for your support!
