Either Porsche or I admit defeat and let BMW really win by ordering an M5, lol.

Either that or I change directions completely and buy a new G550 which I love.

That's the current debate. Spending twice as much as the M3 and getting a new 992 is most likely outcome if M3 gets hit by the ugly stick. There is a dismal, sad part of me still holding out hope that somehow they tie it all together better than the concept and it looks good.

Porsche for the most part has always had strong resale values.

It really depends heavily on the specific model and the overall condition of the car itself.

I traded my m3 for 2020 m550 as well and loving it. I think m550 does everything better except for track type of driving which most Ms sold don't do either.

However if I had the Porsche budget I would not hesitate to get a 911. I have test driven a couple and consider them great cars, and, yes, M has not beaten Porsche yet and I don't think they are trying actually (not that it would be an easy job for them).

Regarding prices I think all cars these days are getting overpriced trying to pay CEO bonuses and provide return on investment. I think it's time the car market crashes like the housing market does...

That is why an M2 exists. Enjoy the smaller car, for those that want/need a 5 passenger sedan The M3 is a great all-rounder.

For the practical nature of a 4door car with a very large trunk, it is kind of a marvel that it handles as well as it does.

Not true to the pedigree of the original M3...we had the M5 for the reason you listed above...no reason to keep making these cars BIGGER and HEAVIER each iteration...

3000 lb M3 with 450hp = Interesting

5-series 4000lb M3 with 450hp = Uninteresting

I have a 1M.....

I absolutely love small cars, but the people that complain about the M3 being too big, conveniently forget that BMW now makes an M2 to replace the old size...

In 2020
1M=E30
M2=E46
M3=E39

yeah, but the M2 is still not a light car...I want the M2 to be <3000 lbs...

Its ridiculous that the M2CS is hardly dropping any weight...the M2C is already TOO heavy

Keep dreaming, less than 3000 lbs is never going to happen in a M2. The only things close are the Miata and 86/FRS. The Cayman and Zupra twins aren’t even below 3000.

true, out of warranty/service plan M cars aren't cheap either, BUT a lot of of people on here get new ones every 3-4 years or lease them, and when you lease new there is no maintenance cost (in US at least), while a comparable Porsche not only cost more but has no free maintenance and if you are leasing it you will probably feel pressured to have them service it so there are no issues at turn in time.
That is incorrect. First 10k miles/12 month service is free. Then after that it's just the basic maintenance you'd do on any performance car. If you're upgrading every 3-4 years the. Cost of maintenance is negligible.

If you're comparing lease rates, that's a whole different story!

Yea, but at a price... they could undergo significant weight loss but they'd most likely have to charge us more to do it. Widespread use of exotic, lightweight materials while still maintaining high safety marks is a tough feat.

Or...they just don't load it up with so much stuff...but I know this goes against common-sense in car-engineering these days

I mean I'm personally with you on that one... my 981 was super low optioned so it was sub 3000 lb but I sadly don't think auto makers will de-content their cars going forward since they know they can do it as a special edition and charge even more for it.

Lol 0 chance the M2 is under 3,000 pounds. Wouldn't surprise me if the vanilla platform is lighter than the current one since that one is a porker. But the upcoming one has to support a 2GC as well.

Just think of it as an aggressively lowered X2 and you'll be happy. (at least that's what BMW seem to think).

Pro tip - Just buy a track car and then you won't be hell bent on having a stripped down daily driver. Every reviewer that's done the new miata says it's loud and rattly like driving in a tin can. I that's the experience you want then not sure why you'd choose a bmw, much less a 4 door sedan.

I'll gladly take on the weight with the way they hide it and provide great driving dynamics. 90% of these will have more investment in options and modifications than money spent on actual track time.

The new M3 is going to be longer, weigh more, AWD, no DCT, and is going to have that questionable grille. I think a lot of people will be disappointed. It reaffirms my love of smaller cars.

Hmmm....there will undoubtedly be RWD, MT, etc. versions of the car. Sure, it'll still have to handle weight effectively, but BMW does a pretty decent job of managing that.
