Simple answer: power-to-weight

To be fair, the quoted 3.9 number is for 0-100km/h, not 0-60mph. That was an error in the OP that was later fixed, in now shows 3.8 0-60mph. This puts the G8X Competition on par with the F8X competition pack as far as BMW quoted acceleration numbers. We'll have to wait and see for independent test from reliable magazine to get an appropriate appreciation of the acceleration performance.

It's planned on purpose to get us all to buy into the XmDrive at a higher cost and to kill of the 6MT.

Big let down for the 6MT crowd, as BMW is forcing your hand to 8AT with MxDrive if you want any performance numbers.

I suspected all along that BMW M would detune the S58 for the 6MT. Sure as hell that DME/ECU will have anti flash tuning software installed from the factory for ya all who think of getting a 6MT and tuning to over 500hp. The crank hub will self implode when over 410 torque.
BMW told us in the very beginning the 6MT would have less power, which shouldn't necessarily mean it's a significantly lesser performer. I don't think it's any surprise really.

Yeah, you can't. They decided to go to 5x112, presumably to "save weight" on a 3900lbs car.
Making everything available for 5x120 instantly gone.

US Pricing?

Any insights on US pricing? Did I miss it? Joe Achilles's video calls out £75k for M3 Comp. I would think that would signal $69k, $70k for US for Comp, no?

Also, looking at curb weights, how is the Comp variant heavier than the Base model. With all the carbon bits, and those wheels...

Finally, looks like Base can only be had with 6MT, not with the ZF 8AT as I've understood. Is that correct? (It's been clear the Comp cant be optioned with a 6mt, but i couldnt tell if the base model is unable to get the 8AT..)

I can remember when I was in college I had a poster of my absolute dream car. The car I hoped to buy when I finished school hoping I'd get a good job to afford it. That was the E46 M3 Competition.

Fast forward almost 20 years to today, and I just cannot believe BMW approved this. Will this car be a poster on some young college students wall? I'm really trying hard to like it but it's just so hideous. It's hard to find a good angle that looks good on the M3. Perhaps the rear looks best, but OMG the entire front end is just awful.

What can I can say positive about the car? Well first thing that caught my attention is the seats. They are absolutely stunning. The steering wheel looks just like my M5c but with carbon bits. Very, very nice, and I'm sure this car is going to drive extremely well. All the track tech is going to be lots of fun to use when tracking this, and I'm sure bmw has underrated it's performance like they usually do. Which means it's probably going to put a huge smile on your face when driving at it's limit.

Final thoughts, maybe the front will look better in person, maybe the handling will be so incredible that the hideous front won't be an issue. Maybe this car will sell just as well as previous generation M3s, or better than. Maybe, maybe, maybe. One thing is for certain though I will NOT be getting one, and as a fan of the 3 series and M3 series for decades, I am very disappointed in the design of this iconic car.

M3 rear quarter exponentially wider than the M4. Some video in FB with the head designer really shows the difference.

No idea if this has been posted here:

https://www.facebook.com/BMW.M/video...DzWcb4qTYpkPad

Also mperf wheels are 20/21...everything is just bigger longer and heavier. Not to say I wouldn't rock one but really wish some things were different.

I don't like anything about the M4, but that may be due to the color. I love Sao Paulo Yellow, but I don't think it looks good on a big bulbous coupe. I think it would work better on the M3 where the novelty of having a bright highlighter color on a big sedan is fun.

I like the M3 except for the front end and this portion of the car:

I get that they wanted to use the same doors as the regular 3er, but I think it could have been done more gracefully.

And finally, I think they nailed the interior, but would have liked to have seen a real parking brake.
I also had that same complaint with the F80 door/fender seam.

I'm not surprised that issue continues with the G80

For those thinking the M4 looks less attractive make sure to watch the Joe Achilles video in the other thread. Color and wheels make a huge difference.

They're getting destroyed on their Instagram. If people thought the hatred for the front end was bad on here, they hadn't checked out their Instagram lol.

Still trying to figure out how a group of decision makers looked at this design and said, THIS IS IT! As opposed to, YOU'RE FIRED!

The MT & clutch can't cope with more than 550Nm. They have to detune to the weakest link in the chain.

Bullshit comment as pointed out a thousand times.

F10 M5 6MT could handle 680Nm up to 7300 rpm.

After many design failures of BMW since the year 2000, I stopped asking myself this question. I guess the decision takers don't know shit about cars and have no feeling with their product identity what so ever and consequently approve everything as long as the product managers promise high ebitda contributions. Beware, when this becomes a sales flop because of design, they will probably conclude that there is no market for performance cars left and switch the entire line-up to FWD. LOL

That’s what i said in another thread - this goes far beyond just these forums.

Damn now I’m considering keeping my f80 as opposed to getting an m2 cs... f80 has more presence than a small two door car and i won’t feel bad driving the “older” generation now lol
