Maybe BMW programs them differently for usage. My X5M has the ZF8 and other than the gearbox being boooooring, it's quite smooth even at sport+. Of course the motor is completely different than the S58 so maybe I6 vs V8 takes away some of the jerkiness..
Isnt the M steptronic transmissions are mainly for the X3M/X4M and M3/M4 etc. I didnt think the M40i had the M Steptronic transmission. Maybe the 3 series sedan with m40i has the same transmission. But even if it is, they r not programmed the same given the different engine and torque/RPM characteristics. Correct me if Im wrong.

The ZF8 is extremely smooth, when using the right settings. What most of us miss is the crispness and the drama of the DCT. You can make it more crisp with tuning, but I don't know if we'll ever get the drama out of the ZF8.

Just watched this video (yes, automotive press opinion and bla, bla, bla but they just say what I found out by testing a fully run-in car before buying mine):

I dont understand where people are getting the abrupt shifts unless you have the transmission in D3 driving around in heavy traffic or parking lots. I only use auto hold in my M3 if I'm in heavy traffic. The M3 doesn't feel right unlike my X5 which I leave auto hold on all the time. Also in heavy traffic I switch back to eco mode. I didn't want a F80 because of DCT and I thought the interior was subpar compared to other BMW cars I owned.
My car is setup in D1 transmission and eco mode and once my car warms up, depending on traffic I switch to M1 or M2 depending on mood and road conditions.
