Auto start/stop inconsistent?

I've noticed that sometimes it stays off for 30+ seconds (ie, sitting at a red light) and other times it shuts off for maybe 5-10 and then starts the car back up for no discernible reason. Anyone else having issues with this? I never had this happen in my M440 except for when I sat for exceptionally long periods and the interior temperature got too hot or cold and it needed to crank up the heat or AC.

I think most turn this “feature” off, I know I do.

You got that right. Let’s spend 80-100k on a car and save 10 cents on gas and make the starter work 40 times. I don’t get it. To boot ac turns off or heat.

I do agree it should work

Gas was $7+ per gallon in the bay area for a while. It's back "down" at $5.39 or so now.

I put 1200 miles on my car in the first couple weeks and almost 22,000 in 18 months on my M440. I'm not saying it's make or break the bank but it's also a not-insignificant amount of driving and gas. I'm also someone who's rather anal about data and tracks every fillup, maintenance/service, etc.

The behavior you’re describing is what I’ve experienced every time I’ve driven with it on. Which is why I always turn it off.

I like data too. Do you have any showing how much gas this saves you on average? I still will never drive with it on, but this would be interesting.

I tuned my old commuter, just because that was the only way you could turn it off. The M4, it's never been on. Not even sure it works.

There’s way more variables at play here than you can understand. Battery charge, engine temperature, climate control temperatures, where you’re stopped at, if your blinker is on and you’re at an intersection turning etc etc etc.

If you don’t have any malfunctions and it is shutting off at least some of the time, then it is working as designed.

One difference I noticed in auto stop/start from 440 is that the M4 auto starts when it senses the car in front of you moves, even if it inches up. I agree that it is not as consistent as the 440. I use it going through drive thru's and at this one left turn that takes 3 lights to make the turn.

It was turned off on my car on delivery and I has not even considered turning it on.
mrs. jummo's X1 requires disarmament upon each start which is a chore but has become automatic.
Our 2018 440 manual had it and the attempt to integrate the feature with a clutch was almost comical.
Fortunately, once turned off, it stayed that way.

it's normal; there are so much criteria. Bimmer-tech-dot-net explains it best, I think. Maybe sometimes the car throws a dice.

The only issue I have with Auto Start Stop is the fact that I can't code it off forever. I means I managed to code the saving feature, which makes it remember the previous state but If I exit M1 or M2, so back in Comfort, it re-enables itself.

That’s weird. Mine stays off, only turns on if the car wash place accidentally presses it.

Maybe country specific?

Yeah, pretty sure you are right. The EU overlords really want all cars to be or at least behave like green econoboxes.

With Bimmercode you can code Start Stop Memory. So once you switch it off, it stays off. Both my G80's have had it off since the moment I took delivery.
