G82 M4 Power to Weight Ratio & Performance Discussion Official Thread

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Here are some preliminary numbers that I pulled off BMW's website in an attempt to have a thoughtful discussion on the weight of the vehicle, which we all hate, but in the context of the engineering improvements.

Would appreciate some source checking but compared an F82 M4C RWD DCT compared to a G82 M4C RWD 8AT.

While the sticker of the weight is huge...the relative increase in power makes up for it and is pretty impressive considering dynos have confirmed S58 to be even higher output in the X3M.

I'm impressed that the G82 is pushing ratios close to a 718 GT4....can't wait to see the Nordschleife lap times.

I don't think your weights are correct for the F82 the F80 was 1635kg EU or 3597lbs the M4 was lighter than that.

Looking at BMW blogs numbers there is hardly any difference in the power/weight ratio:

F80 DCT Comp = 450hp/1635kg = 275hp/tonne
G80 DCT Comp = 510hp/1805kg = 282hp/tonne

The AWD version is going to be pushing 4K lbs! Bummed to say it, but this is a big move in the wrong direction. Might as well just get the M5 which is an outstanding car in its own right.

F8X Competition wasn’t available at launch so many of us are at 425hp...
80 hp bump and 200 extra lbs. very similar to E46 vs E92.

I pulled from their website and their official releases. Perhaps the torque bump is more material but we all know these numbers are underrated anyways, as the S58 has dynod 650whp with just flash + ethanol.

What does a stock S55 vs S58 look like in terms of hp gap?

Says 491 at the wheel on 89 octane for S58 X3M.

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1023743

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1249883

Says 425 at the wheel 93 octane on a 2015 F80 M3 and 400 wheel, some inconsistencies on S55 dynos (someone please confirm a better source as these were the quickest ones I could find).

Bootmod3 says will do 500 with a tune.

https://www.protuningfreaks.com/prod...-m2competition

This is before the huge headroom in the S58 with a simple ECU tune to push it to 600whp...same tune from PTF for the S58.

Thanks! So it looks like the ~80 hp gap is legit averaging the spread and fuel type.

The S58 is a big leap over the S55. It's a shame that the grille has taken all the attention because it's the engine that's going to make these cars special.

Well said....this is how I've been feeling since release and trying to convey to the "I don't like the new barbie's sunglasses..." whining that isn't adding to the conversation.

Function > Form... i'm okay with the grille if it's aerodynamics and cooling are an improvement (which I presume is factual and obvious) and keeps IAT temps down.

You can tell how many owners are really into hard parking their cars when all that's discussed is aesthetics.

I really don't care how it looks. Bigger grill = more air for cooling.

And then complaints about a 3900lb car... and comments that instead they will get a 4400lb car because logic

More airflow is BS. The entire middle of the grill is blocked off, just like a normal bumper would be. It is basically traditional upper and lower grill sets, made to look like massive kidneys.

Those weight numbers I quoted are BMWs official numbers in kg to EU standard so are the power numbers (stock bmw), I have no idea why you're bringing in a flash tuned ethanol dyno that has zero to do with the stock power to weight.

Makes you wonder what in turn replaces the M2 as it goes up in size. Another Z4 M hardtop, perhaps?

Two quotes from Colin Chapman:

"Simplify, then add lightness."

"Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere."

A few more data points, AM&S weighed their loaded M4C LCI at 1,644kg (3,624lbs) and Autobild their M4cs at 1,602kg (3,532lb), which yields the following power-to-weight ratios:
  • 0.1296 G82 M4C 8AT
  • 0.1225 F82 M4C DCT
  • 0.1283 F82 M4cs DCT

So given these data points, the G82C has a 5.7% advantage over the F82C and 1.0% over the M4cs, while the F82 M4cs has a 4.7% advantage over the F82 M4C. A 5.7% advantage is nothing to skuf at, but 1.0% is not enough to entice me to move.
