Ah, didn't know it was on trial. Good to know, thanks!

Can anybody confirm whether the G82 has a remote garage door opener? Surprisingly it is neither an option to order (as in the past for many BMW) nor is it anywhere mentioned as a standard.

For how long is the data plan active in the car? It's 2 months since I took delivery but haven't got any notifications or information on how to renew if there is a trial period that expired.

What does it cost? And what made you renew to use it vs just your regular phone data? Do we get some kind of notification that the trial is ending?

Questions for those who are using Remote Engine Start:

- how useful is this?
- It turns ON the A/C or Heat based on last setting, right?
- What about turning ON heated or ventilated seats based on last setting?
- After remote start do you just approach the car with the key in your pocket and open, jump in & drive off? Or is there something else needed?
- After remote start can you approach the car and open the trunk as usual?

This is one of the features I'm looking forward to specially with kids and groceries etc. in different weather conditions...

I received an e-mail at about 2-3 weeks remaining on the 3 month trial period. I ignored it just like I try to do every time that damn thing pops up.

Good to know. I should still have a month left but seems to not have data service now. I use the Spotify app for music to save my phone's battery and that hasn't worked the last two days. AT&T site doesn't have an entry for the M3 either so not sure how I'm supposed to renew it when the trial is up.

In order for it to work you had to make an account with ATT vehicle services. They will send you an email, it's a 3mo trial with 3gb of data.

I am going to set this thread back several pages by asking this simple question (to which I honestly do not know the answer):

Why would you need internet service provided (at a price) through the vehicle when your cell phone gets wireless service?

Some people don't have tethering on their cell phone and I'm assuming you can use the car WiFi and your laptop while parked or a passenger can use it. Apparently the signal for the car WiFi is much more reliable and faster than cell phone signal too.

Personally 3gb is nothing if you have people trying to stream media.

Yes, that... some carriers used to not allow you to tether if you have the unlimited data plan, not sure now.
I had it with my other cars it was just more convenience if you have kids and they use mobile devices such as iPad. I don't have to turn on my hotspot every time I get into the car and I do not have to leave my phone in the car if I need to step out for a few minutes. For me, also for the reliability purpose, I have VZW and the car has AT&T so I would be able to get both carriers coverage.
Plus, your data plan is unlimited, but it is not truly unlimited, the carrier would limit your data throughput if you use excessive data... so I rather use/drain the car wifi to stream videos (for my kid) and music for me than using my own carrier on any road trip (short or long)

Sometimes its nice to have coverage from another provider as a backup, especially in areas where your normal carrier (T-Mobile in my case) struggles - like the middle of the western US.

I understand tethering, but I never understood why I would use the apps on the cars menu vs just using Apps from my phone via Apple CarPlay.

I don't care for CarPlay. Apple Maps isn't any better than the built-in navigation. Also, using the controller through the iDrive menu is more intuitive and easier see with use of contrasting colors compared to the CarPlay equivalent (Spotify specifically).

For short drives (20-30 minutes), streaming music takes quite a bit of power from the phone than using the car's built in application. I get you can connect your phone with a cable to USB to avoid the issue, but I don't really keep a cable in the car anyway since they always break quickly and that's a waste.

Road trip? Using the car's built in hotspot is a no-brainer.

Definitely looking forward to the answer to these questions as well. Hoping I can cool the car down and have the seats going remotely in this hot Texas summer.

I share your sentiment. I'm not a fan of CarPlay.

I do plugin, which is why I probably don't have the battery drain concern. If I didn't it would be a big issue.

I use Google Maps through CarPlay (Would never use Apple Maps).

Why not keep it on the wireless charger to have it charged while also wirelessly connected? Altho the phone does tend to get really hot whole on the wireless charger.

The wireless charger is pretty ineffective IMO, and the phone does tend to get warm. I have a bungee style cord, so its not like it's getting tangled or in the way of anything in the cabin.
