Pirelli versus Michelin

I ended up getting Pirelli tires two M3‘s in a row.

Anyway here’s my question. Is there really that big a difference? I had 4S sport Michelin‘s on my Mercedes and liked them. Of course they wore uneven but I guess that’s typical. I think I got about 30,000 miles on them. I hear people say Pirelli‘s are terrible in the rain and I live in Florida so that’s not a good thing to hear. I would really like some experienced objective opinions on this. Also please see the attached picture. I got a quote from my dealership to put the Michelin‘s on. $2085 plus tax for all four installed. Are these (in the picture) the actual ones that come on the G80 M3? Thanks.

tons of objective data comparing PS4S and pz4 (not star spec but on the same site you can also find a direct comparison of the standard ps4s vs the star spec) here https://www.tire-reviews.com/Article...-Tire-Test.htm

The pz4 actually beats the ps4s in wet handling and wet braking. However, they do have poor aquaplane resistance comparatively which maybe is what leads to the perception that they are poor in the rain.

Sorry. It was a quick glance. Under 10 seconds. I just read the whole report now. I really appreciate you linking that.

What's the technical difference in the star vs non star version of the Michelin apart from them being BMW recommended?

PS4s is the better tires than the Pzero on any test. Your dealer is charging more than tirerack on the PS4s star specs. I would just go buy the tires from somewhere else or buy them on tirerack and have them install at a trusted tire shop.

That's impressive pricing for a dealer. If you ordered them from Tire Rack and got them installed elsewhere, you could save $300-$400. Around here, you can get tires mounted and balanced for $25 per wheel.

On Tire Rack, BMW Star Spec PS4S are 369.99 per front tire, 414.99 per rear tire.

I don’t know brother either you’re right and BMW are a bunch of morons or we are all exaggerating here and uptight for no reason. Why would BMW mount a really inferior tire on their premium series car? It just doesn’t make any sense.

I can’t find those exact same tires with the star on tire rack.

Are you searching by car for the 19/20 tires?

Thanks for everyone’s help. So I ended up getting the Michelin‘s after all. $1700 installed for all four including an alignment.

What's your opinion of them? I'm still working off the initial greasiness from the mold but first impressions are that they are a bit firmer than the Pirellis. Grip, especially in the rear, is light years better than the wear bar P0s, as expected.

When I was shopping for PS4 AS I told my dealer I got a lower price locally and online and asked if they could do something. I didn't ask for a match as I know their costs and was willing to pay a premium as i was brining car in for service anyway and I figured they would a good job. Anyway, they came within $100 of the other prices I got.

I really don’t know how to compare them to the zeros mostly because I put them on before I started getting on the car hard. I can tell you this though doing a launch control all four tires slip ever so slightly before launch. These cars are very powerful man.

So what did you do with your Pirellis (not that I'm looking for a second set; can't wait to burn through the set I got)?

I have to go back Monday with my pick up truck and pick them up. Then I have to find a home for them somewhere on my property.

Might as well throw them on the member classified section of this forum, before they rot away on your property. A little something for them is better than nothing.
