M4 vs M440i Allocations

Hi All,

Been following this forum for several months now and really appreciate all the great information. I have a question around M4 vs M440i allocations.

I've been reading that M4 allocations are far easier to come by compared to M3 allocations. Does anyone know how M440i allocations are compared to M4? I'm assuming they would be even easier to come by?

Love the M4 but I've decided to go with the M440i for various reasons.

I'm in the Philadelphia area and willing to travel if anyone has any recommendations for dealerships with M440i allocations.

Thanks!

Great question, I’m not sure of the answer. M440’s aren’t as hard to come by as the M4, but still not as plentiful as the M340’s. That was my experience when I ordered my M440 last year, took three months to get the allocation and you really don’t see many on the roads. I love mine, individual color Zanzibar 2, but I’m trading it in for a M4 convertible (G83) that’s in route on the Morning Lena. Long story short, I’ve been driving convertibles for twenty-five years and thought I was ready to move on to a coupe. WRONG!! And my wife will never let me forget it!!

My sense is that M440i allocations may not be much easier to get (if any easier) than M4. A friend waited a bit for an M440 allocation last year, and ultimately got the car and loves it…but during his wait, the same dealership had multiple M4 allocations if I recall. I also think it doesn’t help that dealers seem more inclined to order M440i’s for their lots, as opposed to M4s which seem more frequently pre-sold and custom ordered.

My high-volume dealership that received two M4 CSL allocations had two M440i xDrive allocations in December, one in January, and none in February or March.

My thinking was that the M4 is more of a "custom" car where the typical buyers are going to order exactly to their specifications. Where as the M440i is more a of "common" car where someone might just walk in off the street and buy it (at least during normal times when car dealerships actually had inventory). Given the larger potential buyer pool I assumed more allocations but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I have actually not seen a G82 on the road and I live just outside the city.

I think when the LCI comes, the allocations will be more prevalent. I know the 430i, esp the vert, are highly desirable.

Allocation wise, every dealer and surrounding area is different so it depends on many factors. The MSRP on my M440 was almost $70k. That is pretty crazy and prop hard to move.

Why the M440 over the M4?

I bought a lightly used M440 while waiting for my G82 allocation. I am now wondering if I need the M4 now I have an allocation (esp. with 2023 dashboard). Off-topic I know. Back on topic ,I have noticed that BMW Lancaster (where I got mine) have had a few M440s earlier in the year but that seems to have dried up. They aren't far from Phila and might be worth a call.

As funny as this may sound, I actually was waffling between an M440i GC and an M3 Comp. My CA convinced me of the M3 Comp, so I decided to go that route. Fast forward to a week ago, and he said the M440i GC build I had spec'd came in. At this point, I had not received an allocation for the M3 comp, so I went ahead and went with the M440i GC.

If you're worried about time, the M440i will get here much faster. No doubt about that at all. It's all but guaranteed that BMW builds probably 10 M440i's for every 1 M4.

I'm thinking M440 over M4 given that this will be my one and only car and the 440 fits more as a daily driver over the 4; softer ride, better MGP, etc.

Probably somewhat shortsighted (especially when buying a car in this price range) but the thought of getting a new car and then needing to buy winter tires and hassle with swapping back and forth is not something I want to deal with.

Thanks, I'll try them. Not in a crazy rush and willing to wait. Personally loathe the car buying process so I'm willing to travel to in order to work with a good/reputable dealer who isn't looking for over MSRP

Softer Ride...well there is a comfort mode. Not sure how soft it is. I feel in comfort mode in the M440 and default/efficiency in the M4, the ride itself is the same. It is hard for me to tell for sure because my M440 has the ventilated seat option with a completely different seat to accommodate. Totally unacceptable with no bolster. Take a hard turn and if not secured you will either go out the window or into the passenger seat.

Maybe Park Ave BMW in Jersey. Another member mentioned them getting five last month as well.

That was most likely me. I mentioned a few weeks back that Park Ave BMW got 5 M4 allocations and I just made the cutoff at #5. About 5-6 weeks ago I placed a deposit. Within 2 weeks I got the allocation. Now my car is at the port. Zero markup. I paid MSRP.

If interested, reach out to Brad Russak. His number is 201-843-7900, ext. 2159 and e-mail is brad@parkavebmw.com. He's a good guy, no pressure. Tell him John Govic sent you.

Good luck.
