I'm still trying to figure it out with 2,200 miles on my car including 85 percent of miles on the highway. Since most of my cars have had manual transmissions, I think I like the M1 set to all sport settings while driving around town, and my transmission at the 3 setting that feels more like driving a manual. The shift points seem more natural.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

M1 is set to all applicable settings in Sport and the transmission in D2.

M2 is set to all applicable settings in Sport+ and the transmission in D3.

I start the car in M2 and drive in M2 99% of the time.

99% of my driving is 'relaxed' but I occasionally need all hands on deck to pass on 2-lane roads (usually with limited passing distance). Streets in town range from okay to awful. So M1 puts steering and brakes in sport, leaves engine and suspension in comfort, and keeps transmission in D1. M2 ("pass mode") moves engine into sport and transmission into D2.

FWIW, I set up my home Control Display screen to show engine data (water temp), tire data, and M set-up. That way I can adjust from the M1 or M2 settings with a couple presses of the touchscreen.

I have M1 set up with sport+ engine, comfort brakes, comfort suspension, sport steering and D1.

M2 is set up to sport+ everything and D3.

I drive in M1 most of the time.

I have two favorite modes. When I'm driving with the wife M1...alone it's turn it up to 11.

Knock the shifter over and pops you in S mode or using settings menu. Knocking back puts you back in D

The car isn't faster with the Engine in SPORT+ compared to SPORT. I'd rather keep the pedal modulation as linear as possible to manage throttle for corner exit.

Suspension is SPORT+ only for the smoothest of tracks.

Steering is always in COMFORT because heavy steering is not the same thing as feedback. If anything, SPORT steering actually makes the car feel more numb.

DSC always off for the track except the first laps of the day when everything is cold, especially the tires, and I'm feeling out the track. It's on MDM for the first 2-3 laps, then I pit come in to check and adjust tire pressures, then one. more lap in MDM, then DSC off. Besides the obvious advantages of DSC off, it also saves your brake pads and reduces brake temps.

In sequential mode, what is the impact of the drive logic settings (S1, S2, S3), if we are shifting on our own. I have 6000 miles on my car and have explored the automatic combinations. I am going to start using sequential but my simple brain does not see the point of drive logic settings when in sequential.

The manual doesn't seem to differentiate between D & S. My assumption would be that even if you are doing the shifting in S1/S2/S3, the computer & transmission is still reacting in a different manner to the shifts based on being in 1, 2, or 3.

I will tell you in S, the car will just bang off the rev limiter. Don't ask me how I know.

The BMW videos say that in D as you go from 1-3 it will hold higher revs for change. In S 1-3 the shift speed increases.

The 3 main shift settings, for the people that don't have their car, or, just don't know, are as follows:

1. Small Number (the camera didn't do a very good job of making the number opaque. The small number would be opaque in this instance)
This is D (Auto) mode and the car is in 8th gear. Under norman auto mode this is the screen you'll see. As the car upshifts, (or downshifts) only the number changes, corresponding to the gear you're in. 1D, 2D, 3D etc, as the car upshifts in auto. In this mode, if you click the arrow on the shifter to 3, the car will never shift into 8th gear. Because shifting into drivelogic 3 is the most aggressive, shift mode, the transmission is always downshifts one gear when you select the highest shift setting.

2. This is what you see in S (Sequential or Manual mode.) A large number with no letter next to it. To get into this mode, from auto, you bump the shifter to the right, one time. And the cheeseburger (3 lines/ drivelogic) is all the way at the top. This is S3 (firmest shift setting) the car will not shift for you. (Unconfirmed in any gears higher than 4. I need to test that.) This mode also activates the shift lights at the top of the gauge cluster.

3. Big number, small letter. This mode is temporary manual/ sequential mode. This is when you're driving in auto, and pull a paddle, the car goes into sequential, and after 5 or so seconds, reverts, automatically, back into auto mode, if you're just cruising.

This I rarely use. I do however use it when accelerating hard, as sometimes you can pull the downshift paddle and grab one gear lower than the auto mode selects, by flooring the accelerator. But as soon as you go zero throttle or less than 20% throttle, it will shift back into auto, within that 5 seconds or so.
