I was originally looking at the M340 and the 440i. I saw a YouTube video of a tuned one, and I said, "I'm a car guy, I have to have one." I've always liked BMW, but I've never stepped up to getting an M car. I had a C7 and was all about the C8 when it was announced. But I went and sat in one, and although I was impressed with it, for a Corvette, I wasnt over the moon with it. being 6'3 limits you to the cars you can comfortably drive. I find it hard to get into a Corvette. Even my C7 had me tilting my head to see the red light. I could see the top of the green, but the red was too far up without making that adjustment. And then there was the stopping power. It would send my kneecaps into the dash if I had to brake hard in Mexico.
Then I started looking at the real M cars. I was never bothered by the huge front grill, I saw them release in the launch colors, and the M4 really impressed me. The M3 for the huge rear fenders, but there's just something about a coupe, for me. I just need to step up to the M-car. Problem is, I couldn't stop checking every option on the visualizer, and may regret it, in the future. Then there is the S58. Fully forged bottom end. I like to modify my cars, and seeing that drift team get 1040hp and 1,200nm was just insane to me. So, for me, its all about the smile per mile. Last edited by Limegrntaln; 07-12-2021 at 03:37 AM.. |

An interesting situation for me would have been if there was a C8, Z51 3LT for the same price--no ripoff stealership "market adjustment," sitting next to the M4C. I hate the side view of the C8; looks good otherwise, like the interior, and excellent powertrain. 15 years of Vettes would certainly come into play--and I loved my '18 C7. The M4 is within a tenth or two of the C8 at sea level. Here, at 7000', it is much quicker--the NA 6.2 loses 100hp; twin turbos lose nothing. Then, the luxury is beyond even the 3LT. And, I wanted performance and luxury. Would have made the same choice.

The M and non-M are totally different cars.
I owned the F30 then the F80 and biggest surprise to me was how different the two were. Not necessarily 0-60 or 0-100 but everything else - capability, noise, responsiveness, quickness, rawness… Went to G20 (M340i) for 9 months and could not get excited after first few weeks. After 9 months , decided to jump on a new F87 and absolutely loving it… I’d say the difference between the two is much bigger then the closeness between them… |

I can ensure you a thing. I'm selling my beloved M140i for a brand new M3 Competition Xdrive.
As my M140i is a pre OPF version, my only fear is the lack of sound of it compared to my B58, but....as it's something that can be improved easily changing the exhaust system, I have no regrets, and I'll purchase it. It's true, the M performance cars are great cars, a real bargain......but.....they're not real M cars. In my family we had up to 10 BMWs in the last 15 years, and only two real M cars. A wonderful M5 e39....that I really miss. And a brand new M8 competition coupé. The difference between an M car and an M performance car is more thank noticeable. believe me, it is something completely different. To me real M cars are expensive...but worth the money.

440 is a torque monster and is more effortless to drive day to day. Actually feel much stronger than the M3/4 when not pushed.
But things change dramatically when you include hard brake, aggressive turn in, WOT exit and keep WOT all the way. If you're able to hold rpm constantly above 3k and on boost, the power difference is very noticeable. No mention of the difference in look and interior quality.

Wow. Two pages of spot-on comments, not a single thing that I can find to disagree with.
I'll add to that, that there are an awful lot of little things that are not mentioned in the sales brochures that improve the M cars over the base editions. Individually, not a big deal, but taken as a whole, it makes for a totally different driving experience.

I drove an M440i on an autocross-ish course and it was a blast. Drove it on the street and it was super comfortable, composed and a bit boring. I think the real M brings some of that excitement to the regular daily driving.

Would have bought one if it weren't for the lack of a manual. Saw it as as sign that I should finally get myself an M3 (as I've been wanting one since i could drive).
So here i am, 20k over my initial car budget with an M3 on the way.

M340 550M 760M and other bullshit just made for profit for BMW. you can sell a non M car for more and the M car for more, since there is a nonM Mcar.
Exactly my point - confusing as hell and took away thee purity of M badge and tricolor. E39 and e34 540 were not slow, neither was 330 e46 by that time standards, but it was not an M whatever. Just a car with appropriately labeled motor. This my biggest problem with 340M. It is a ridiculously successful enterprise tho, noone can argue with smth that makes money. On the road everyone will be OK with a 300hp Everything else is "Who's is longer" game. |

S58 I think is enough of an improvement over the B58 to warrant spending the extra money on the M3

My dream Christmas present would be an IOMG M4 and a Mist Red C8. Oh well, I just put a deposit down on an M4 6-speed manual last week. No room in my garage for a Vette too, and my wallet would cringe at the thought of 2 cars at once. Your guess is as good as mine as to when the M4 will arrive. |

The AWD M440i gives a good straight line race with the M4C until about 80 mph. The M4 will win every time in the twisties.

M3/M4, they are always better and will always be better than non M cars.
It also depends on what you want to do with it. As a daily, M cars are too rough on city roads, guzzle gas, higher insurance, etc and you almost never get to experience its full capablities. For track, racing, tuning etc, G80 is still the best bang for the buck. BMW dialed the daily driver, power and looks category with M340/M440 cars and I do love mine for that aspect. I don't need more power or better handling when I am stuck on I5 doing 15 miles an hr but it is nice to have great power when going over mountain passes or when you really need it. For a daily M340 feels better than an M car for my purposes. I also had a E92 335 manual and E92 M3 manual and that was also the case then. I hated daily driving the M3 where 335 was a blast to drive. My lease is up next year and I would love to replace it with a M3 but I still can not get over that grill and because of that M3/4 is completely out until (or if) BMW does something about it. G80 generation is by far the best M car I have ever driven but I need to enjoy looking at what I am driving. Next year will either be another M340, M5 or something completely different, jury is still out.

If not tracking, the benefits M car has are the looks (if you like the way it looks), more power and still being able to get one in manual transmission. Having said what I said, if they do something about the front end, I would buy one in a heart beat.

I was thinking that the reason to get it is the tighter handling and feel of a real sports car. I would get it despite the looks, not because of them. I'm not crazy about the current polarizing look of the grill and some of the other look-at-me styling. I don't need more power and I will not get the manual. Perhaps I should reconsider. Luckily I will get to drive it on track next month so I can decide if it makes sense for me.

I've owned a 2020 M340i and it was a pretty quick car at the time but got bored because it just didn't have that excitement like I had in the F80. I got called a ricer a few times because the peasants didn't know that the ///M340i emblem was real… lol I'm definitely enjoying the G80 overall tho.

I think the engine for the new M cars (S58) speaks for itself and alone is more then enough reason to purchase over the M340i.
Other things include the standard carbon fiber roof and all the aluminum M components on the suspension/ m components in general. You have options like the full carbon fiber bucket seats which are a game changer to me for the interior. Once the S58 is mainstream tunable, it won't even be close. It's already crazy what the xdrive m3/m4s are doing with jb4 and stock ecu restraints. |
