with HEA cars on the production lines, we should hopefully see media pieces by next month and member test drives at dealers in Jan. Some recent UK youtuber reviews suggest manufacturers have been sending cars with EU plates directly to the UK.
given what's going on with the pandemic still, highly doubt there'd be organized media events at some warm location suitable for the RWD cars.

Joe Achilles mentioned he's due to drive one in January in one of his recent videos (I think it was within the M550 or M5C LCI first drive impression he did).

I agree. They are definitely going to leave money on the table, as certain people (not me, I'm going 6MT) will opt for RWD to avoid waiting for a July and later build.

Don't sell yourself short as we are all fans or we wouldn't be here and taste is objective after all. They aren't just targeting just you as they are targeting buyers in general of mid-luxury range, performance oriented cars that want flexibility of manual/auto transmission, RWD/AWD, etc.

Discussed ad nauseam on the forums. If it drives better, not a single person will care. Outside of track enthusiasts.

Will the average consumer care? Absolutely not because most of M cars sold will never see more than 4500 rpms other than merging on a freeway. There are badge humpers and there are drivers. The badge humpers pay for the development so we can't really complain too much. It is pretty rare for any of these cars to truly be driven in anger any more. For those of us that do want to experience the last 20% of the performance, the weight absolutely matters. It is not just track drivers that care. |

More weight is never good but people act like this has never happened before. It has happened every time except for the F8X. Now for some reason people act as if the F8X is the norm. It’s not.

CanAutM3 is right again. 4,000 pound cars are not fun cars. They are grocery getters and people haulers. You definitely feel the weight of a 4,000 pound car.

Well I did expected the F8X to become the "new norm" in terms of weight reduction effort over the base series. With the G8X going up in size, I for sure expected some level of weight gain, albeit not in the realm of what we are seeing here. It sure seems BMW ///M spent very little effort in keeping the weight down for this gen.

The fact of the matter is BMW is becoming more like Lexus, Infiniti, etc. and less of a driving focused brand like Porsche. This will be even more true if BMW kills off coupes, roadsters, and convertibles.

BMW did not focus on weight reduction this time. Instead they focused on traction and grip. That is IMO the main advancement of the G8X generation. AWD + wider front tires and front track. We are also getting a healthy power bump which we did not get with the F8X. And I suspect that is why we got the weight work on the F8X, BMW couldn’t get the expected (by us the consumer) HP bump out of the S55. Last edited by solstice; 11-14-2020 at 10:37 PM.. |

lets give BMW credit where it's due.... In this gen, its direct competitors (incoming W206 C63 and B10 RS4/5) will both inevitably get heavier from their rumored PHEV powertrains that also zap character. Both cars in their current gen already at 4000lb as a reminder. For BMW to offer a brand new combustion I6 and to give consumer choices in AWD, RWD, MT, AT, and every body style imaginable including a wagon
![]() calling BMW becoming like "lexus, infiniti" is hugely unfair... Both of those brands are in quite a mess right now with few competitive products for both the EV crowd and the performance enthusiasts. guys like CanAutM3 have way more credential to discuss impacts of weight on track driving so i wont even bother ... but i do agree its a bit odd that AWD G8X will basically be at the curb weight of F90 M5 that will still be around for 3 years. Will have to see in the driving reviews if the extra weight from the beefier underpinnings and bracings are net positives.

can you explain and substantiate this claim? The weight reduction came from motorsport applications driven by Birmann & co who now works at Hyundai because he got no respect at bmw under new cost cutting penny pincher ceo that comes from factory operations. keep in mind s55 in stock form is in m2cs racing. Steve Dinan stated it is designed for 600hp and his tunes support it.
