The Official G8x Grille Talk Thread

I think I'm starting to get used to the bigger grilles, but it doesn't invoke any other feeling besides disgust. At least it doesn't make me angry anymore. I still have my F80 and E46 so that makes me happy. This will be a fun car to follow over the next few years to see how it does. Will also be fun to see how many heads will roll if this doesn't work out

This grill looks a lot like an Audi grill, it's basically it with a cutout in the middle. Very boring. Why does bmw copy everything Audi does even if its not a good idea?

My issue is that the grill ruins all non-ms except m40i versions that are blacked out and will creep up fast in price. The M will be pricey as an M is and still doesn't look that good.

Curious as to how the next gen 5 is going to inherit this grill. If its smaller probably looks odd partially overlapping the front license plate or do they go large as this one

Copying Audi? Lol They've based the front end design off of heritage models such as the 327, 501 502 and 503(1940s). The BMW grilles have changed countless times through the years, enough of this bullshit.

Agree, horizontal slats, top to bottom design, middle piece for license plate, and wider at the top than bottom, they literally just cut an Audi grill in half. BMW using the 328 as an excuse is just lazy and not even comparable with the difference in design language and standards of the 1930/40's.

I agree as well. Bmw seems to think that this is a revolutionary design that will set itself apart. In my opinion just more proof how much brands are becoming very homogenized. I took out the middle line and badge, voila

so bmw decided to do a modern-retro throwback with the grill for 2021-2026 bread and butter 3 and 4 series? Bc heritage and old school is what the people want? Not buying it. Seems more like a me-too copy of the industry: Audi, Mercedes, Toyota and many other brands. Bmw like Porsche were hold-outs and made attractive cars in the recent gen, now bmw are just following.

Yep, even the side profile looks like an Audi A5/Camaro and rear like a Lexus/Acura, nothing about the design is "revolutionary," its all very familiar and has been done before.

You’re completely wrong. The front grille design was based on the Lincoln MKT

With the camo it looks similar to the G20 which is already a good looking car. Only when the camo comes off the fenders/hood/roof will we be able to see the fender flares, body lines and carbon etc and it will then look like an ///M. As for the grill I think it's going to suit the car and make it standout from the G20 and add a lot of road presence. The G80 is going to be a breakthrough in terms of performance and tech and I think all the haters are going to change their minds when it's launched and/or see it in person

It will be big and feel just as much.

If you ever drove the M340i, it's a rocket on the highway but around town, it feels like you're at the helm of a boat, which doesn't bode well for the narrow, congested, city streets..

The F82 looked so sleeked, even if it wasn't my thing, I certainly wouldn't mind owning one

This G80 feel like more of a chore, than something to spark up excitement; like your grandfather kicking the bucket and leaving you his Cadillac CTS-V; yea, I'll take it but only because it's free..

So to speak..

I'm at the point where I can focus my attention on the good parts of this car (generally from the wheel axles inward), but I'm closer to Pluto than buying one.

I think what some of us cant accept is that BMW painted sky green and when we said no it should be blue, they released like 200 articles to the car press that explain to us how no, the sky is green and its cool. Like ok, its a bit polarising design, it isnt as successful, but to have all these designers dragged in front and commenting and trying to laughably convince me this thing looks like 328 or E9 is a joke. So noone is buying it. OK may be 4 people do who never seen a 328 or E9 in person and their world view is still evolving as it was for everyone one of us at that age, but also accept some criticism. Thats why people are hating actually. People are not idiots, they jsut dont have time to write things out, its internet, so they say it sucks or post bleh emoji and move on. It's not because BMW just makes a bit different car. I would never buy it but plenty of people will because they already bought a ton of less than perfect looking cars from BMW in last decade because of branding or tech or driving. They are not best designed cars looks wise, and its ok.

Think of it this way. Back in 2000s people were appaled by this flame surfacing, and some of it was correct - E65 was a monster only mother could love, but Z4 Coupe or 6 series did things a little better, and E90 wasnt that bad, and E60 actually aged well. So indeed things grow on people. But - the new M4 is the E65 of that comparison! And people by now also agree that BMW best design is actually mid to late 90s done by that one dude who never got a promotion and left. And his cars today look most resolved, most beautiful and are going up in value because of looks.

I thought the US buys about half of all M cars produced. Why not cater their design to the US market by far the number #1 buyer of M cars?
