These gauges look like those on the dashboard of a Kid's Electric Ride on car from Kmart

I don't know about BMW leading the game. Have you seen what Mercedes is doing with augmented reality in their HUD?

Mercedes HUD Augmented Reality
The Merc AR for the upcoming S class is impressive. The upcoming all new 7 series will display BMW's newest HUD. Should be interesting 🤔

I prefer an analog watch over digital any day. Same goes for gauges. But I'll be ok with the digital gauges in the G80.

My A35 with HUD and AR Nav absolutely blows away anything BMW have - including 8 series, M's. And we're talking a Merc A class here. Want a centre rev counter (that goes CW !), got it. Want twin analog dials, got it. Want full nav in the dash, got it.

BMW are miles behind. Interesting that the i4 is heading to the full screen layout as per MB. Twin binnacles look ancient, as they are.

Edit, only talking digital dash here, not car dynamics :-)

I have wondered why manufacturers are going with digital gauges and electronic parking brakes on enthusiast cars?

Is it less expensive, better, or other?

Mainly it opens up for additional features and functionality. Some can help with performance and even race cars need to stay technologically advanced to be competitive.

Does it make them more fun? Highly questionable.

I much prefer the mini finger operated lever for the electronic brake on my Jeep to the yank the stick up with my whole hand lever on my M4.

Here' another reason to dislike the digital dash - over dimmed displays when you tint

Window tint triggering auto-dimming on both displays during the day https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1628439

As far as I know BMW has no answer for this

FWIW... in my humble opinion... BMWs implementation of Virtual Cockpit is probably the worst I've seen... granted the M car is a little better with the one middle digital gauge in M mode but the standard reverse tachometer dash is absolutely disgusting. Audi did it completely right and knocked it out of the park with analog looking 100% digital gauges... Benz came a close 2nd... BMW, not entirely sure what the thought was there, just like the front.

Now if only Audi or MB had some cars that I liked I'd be all set.

Virtual cockpit sucks, I have it. It's very limited in function compared to even the analog gauges from last gen VAG cars.

the digital gauges will not age well, they will look like sh** in a few years as the new tech rolls out. who wants a 5 year old phone or laptop screen? nobody.

BMW digital cluster is already obsolete tech (it's not RGB OLED, it's not 120Hz, doesn't have 3D lenses to give it depth, the graphics is too dull and there isn't much cool animation effects either).... I personally prefer high quality analog main dials combined with multiple screens that surround or seamlessly integrate with the dials...

and oh yeah I make tech for a living...so not anti tech

If you don't like R8 or Benz GTs... then I don't know what to tell you because BMW does not currently make a car of that caliber 😂.

Those who have said that analog gauges only appeal to "well seasoned" (old) drivers miss a basic point. Many of the buyers of the manual transmission are in the same demographic. If you want to keep the MT option available, an analog option might keep some geezers from going over to the dark side. My daughter is now 40. She was never an enthusiast, but she drove a manual until a couple of years ago. She told me that none of her friends that were her age could drive her stick-shift car.

I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about here. The vehicle still come with a tachometer. Two different ones actually, one in regular and one in M-mode. All we ever hear from the manual transmission fanboys is how they enjoy the "feel" and connectedness" of a manual and now you are changing the goalposts to analog tachs or nothing? Man some of you will never be happy. I feel sorry for manufacturers as no matter how hard they try to cater to a group of people you have people complaining about every single thing. If you are going to go to the "dark side" because a manual transmission isn't good enough without an analog tach then by all means please go there because you are probably never going to be happy with any new car these days. Also what does your daughter driving a manual have to do with analog gauges?

How bout can we have tachs that go in the same direction (clockwise) as the past 100 years of driving cars? Lets say you are the old age of 31, a real geezer right? Then you have been driving 17 years of it that way. Its visual memory and familiarity, why would changing that be good? So that the map directions for a road trip can be bigger and centered? Seems like real performance progress right there. When can I get that?

I wanted an C63 AMG, but they aren't making new coupes and bringing them to the US. I don't have R8 money.

It's very simple ... In the weatern hemisphere we read from left to right. On the number scale zero is on the left and +infinity on the right. Time clocks operate by turning all arms to the right. How does it make sense to anybody that the speed gage design is designed per the numbers scale but the rpm gage is the oposite causing them to colide (imaginary point)? What were they smoking?
