2011 BMW M3  [10.00]
2011 BMW 335i  [10.00]
I went yesterday to the BMW UDE just to take a closer look at both cars and to have some fun.

I agree about one thing: It is better in real life than photos, and the more you get close the better...definitely not well done, but I think I can live with it esp. the M3, my favorite one.

Other than that, still do not agree with the M235i looking at all, but wow, this thing drives well!

I ended up taking the Z4 M40i for spin on the road, I will strongly recommend it for anyone looking at this segment.

In the end, the M340i won my heart.

Yes, M235i drove surprisingly well and I did enjoy the Z4 test drive!

It's worse in an autoX, where I'd add throttle progressively out of a turn only to find no response. More throttle, nothing. Then the turbo finally builds enough boost and it smacks you in the face, and you're way out of position because you asked for that power 100ft ago.

And as you said, it's not exactly a looker.

The 340 was on a different planet for me, capabilities-wise.
I was taken a bit by his opinion of the M235i which is arguably the worst car in BMW's current line-up. However, you know what they say about opinions. There's no scenario where I would take a FWD M235i over a RWD M340I or even an XI but again we are all individuals here.

PS. OMG G80 is growing on me but i still have almost 2 years left for an upgrade so who knows how I will feel then. There's also the G87 which should be out by the time my lease is up.

I would not take an M235 GC either. I was just surprised how well it drove in the auto-X. On that note I wouldn't take a M340i either. It just didn't deliver what am looking for in a high performance sedan. Until I drive the G80, I am not yet convinced BMW's M division will be delivering the types of
cars that we have grown to love without Albert Biermann.

I like how the G80 looks. But that's subjective. The 235...impossible for it to feel better than a rear drive car.

Looks good, but why did they feel the need to shine green lights on an already green car? 😂

It was a teaser of the green color while the veil was on... here are some more pics...I believe this is the same car that OP saw. As a curious note apparently there are only 4 or 5 of these preproduction models doing the rounds across the US. They were so preproduction that the brace on the engine bay was not CF, the Idrive image on startup was actually showing an X3, and then the tires where PSS as opposed to the P4S. Anyhoo here are a couple more pics...

Another thing that I liked was how much room there was upfront for tires. The front track has been widened and you can see it, aesthetically it's beautiful but functionally it will be amazing, I'm sure 305s should fit in there without much of a problem.

Decent is a relative term considering the crap 2020 has been so far, it could've been worse.

I am guessing they needed to differentiate front end to look compared to M340i, instead of just slapping M3 badges and calling it a day. Besides, BMW is known to pull this "release now, improve later during LCI" trickery for decades. So I expect no less internet uproar when it is time for LCI.

Besides, If I compare to similar cars in the price/performance category:
  • Lexus RCF, Audi RS5 - both have even bigger gaping mouths and look bland
  • Q50 sport- looks like from 2000s ancient, I didn't know they even made these
  • ATS-V- too chintsy
  • C63 Merc- reserved looks but looks too much like any other cut and paste merc
  • Tesla Model 3- looks like a fat frog
