No, none of this makes Audi (or any of the other competition) look any better. When the premium segment no longer appears to be worth the coin, maybe time to just get a Honda, or whatever, and be done with it.
Or not...

You struck a cord with me on that statement - I really am with you here.

Who is the target? For a car in this segment, shouldn't the target market be the late 20/early 30's and up mid-level professional who wants to feel excitement once in a while on a dreary commute, and barnstorm backroads or run track-days on any weekend? To me, one stand out line-item that told me that I'm no longer who they want to reach is the power trunklid. Really BMW. In a sporting sedan that's already bloated up past the 2ton mark, I guess why not - but still, that's not the ethos that kept most of us eagerly snatching up order slots.

I don't want any parts of my anatomy feeling like they're on fire nowadays - that would call for penicillin.

I can't shake the impression that every bit of material other than the needed 360 press-photos is really trying its balls off to hide the grille as much as is possible.

I don't think BMW are proud of it either, but if it's your particular style, you do you and F the haters!

Just not my bag, baby.

Another nugget from my unwise mind: An associate has worked with many different manufacturers as part of interior design and NVH - he is now with one of the Koreans. He made the move prior to Hyundai/Kia poaching a good bit of the BMW M design team..... That manufacturer is now killing it, putting out aesthetically pleasing and still unique vehicles - and hitting the nail on the head with their new performance line. Ironically, the "N" Line. What comes after M? Well, a hyundai isn't in my future for a toy - but their product is now a serious option for those in the hot-hatch family, and most of my driving group actually feel the N is the best in class for driving experience. That's a company that's getting youth buyers in hand over fist. Something just hasn't felt right in Munich since they lost Albert Biermann.
Your assessment of the target audience is wrong. That's behind the times. These cars are now targeted toward those who care more about image than those who want to spice up their commute with performance. Nothing says this more than their collaboration with the fashion industry.

There is a disturbing amount of pain and screaming in this M car launch.

Not just here in Bimmerpost but now in the adverts.

3 things for me:

1. Still hate the grills (They will look even worse with the US plate, being taller but not as wide).
2. Hate them slightly less than the regular 4 grills.
3. At least the silhouette still looks like a BMW, something that can't be said for the iX.

There. I said something nice about it (sort of).

That's why I said 'shouldn't their target be'. The kids who are burning their stimmy checks to buy the newest Yeezys aren't the ones who will be brand loyal. They'll be fleek-loyal. Tell me, how's phat farm doing, or cross-colors. How about 8-ball products? Or Tommy Hilfigers' reputation as 'luxury'? Nautica, just the same. Kangol?

Each time that a brand was diluted to appeal to the 'it' scene, the demise of the product (and any nods to what made them become desirable in the first place) seems to speed up.

Lol this whole new ad and marketing campaign is horrible. It’s just not my cup of tea. I haven’t seen the G80 in person so I’ll hold my final thoughts on it until then but I definitely can say I don’t like this need for speed M3 or these new style commercials they are producing.

I loved when BMW had the short films to promote the cars of the early 2000’s, but this video game style era of marketing of bmw hopefully passes soon, because it’s so tacky.

I totally respect your point of view. Better to stay young in his head than to become an old grumpy troll. This car is just not for me, and I can’t hide how disappointed I am of the design revolution ongoing at BMW.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by ‘I work on Dragon ball’? 🤔

Not sure if this has been brought up in this thread, but let's compare 2011 BMW marketing and design to 2020 BMWhatthefuckisthat

Trying to separate the artistic vision (was there a vision? ...) of the video from M Performance parts.

Artistic vision: the homage to The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Dryft in the beginning of the video couldn't define the goal for the viewer and fell short of the very goal which remains a mystery to this date.

M Performance parts: the brief glimpse of the exhaust looks awesome.

Verdict: not a threat to the artistic vision of VDub campaign from 2006.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDub

"VDub was an American advertising campaign used by Volkswagen during 2006 for the Volkswagen GTI. Intended to parody MTV's Pimp My Ride, advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky created a series of three television commercials directed by Jonas Åkerlund, starring Swedish actor Peter Stormare as an effete German engineer named Wolfgang, and German model Sonja Wöstendiek as his assistant Miss Helga.

In each ad, Wolfgang introduces a "contestant" and Miss Helga showcases and insults their gaudy and distastefully modified compact car of a competitive make - specifically a Mitsubishi Eclipse, Ford Focus and a Honda Civic. Wolfgang then excitedly announces that they are going to "unpimp" the contestant's car, in which he presses a button on a handheld remote and the car is violently destroyed (such as being crushed by a shipping container or smashed by a wrecking ball) as the contestant watches. Each contestant is then given a brand new Volkswagen GTI, a car that has been "pre-tuned by German engineers". Wolfgang uses gestures and expressions reminiscent of hip-hop culture throughout the ads for humorous effect, such as when he proclaims "we just dropped it like it's hot!" after crushing a Ford Focus. Most notably, he opens every ad with "V Dub in the house!" and ends every ad by recreating the Volkswagen logo in a hand sign accompanied with, "V Dub! Representing Deutschland!"
