M3 vs. Raptor Vs. Rivian R1T
Yes I know these are completely different cars but I got an itch.
I took delivery of a 911 4GTS a few months back and the M3 has been sitting in the driveway for extended periods of time. I love the M3. Its so God damn fast and it is truly a jack of all trades. We have used it on ski trips, family vacations, etc. Oh and those carbon buckets!!!! So special every time I get in it. However with the car is still holding its value, if I'm to get into something new, now is probably the time. I've always wanted a Raptor because it is so bad ass. However the Rivian is nearly as fast as the M3 in a straight line. Do any M3 owners out there have experience with either of these two cars. Just floating the idea for now but may make it a reality in the next month or so.

My vehicle before the G80 was Gen2 Raptor SCREW. The truck can probably do 99% of the things you ask it to do, VERY versatile offroad wise.
It's driving/parking around the city, that's a pain in the ass. The truck is just so damn wide that it becomes a little impractical. |

I drove a Rivian R1T prior to buying my M3.
Background....I have owned two Teslas and I am an EV fan. I also own three Porsches (whoops) and my current daily is a 997.2 generation 911 Turbo S that I will be selling to make way for a G80 M3CX. I also live in Houston where pickups rule. My thought on the Rivian is....unless you are going to USE the thing as a truck, don't buy it. In my case, I'd love to own one as a daily, but in no way would it give me the same satisfaction as dailying an M3. I enjoy driving dynamics too much. The Rivian is cool! It's fast and capable....for a truck. I went into the the test drive expecting to be blown away by the acceleration from the near 900 HP figure and wasn't. It didn't feel markedly faster than my Model 3 Performance. And I honestly don't need either a pickup or a 3 row SUV (R1S) since we just bought a new Cayenne. Dynamically, it does well...for a truck. The Raptor will have way better ride given it's suspension capabilities. The Rivian rides more like a truck that can go off road but doesn't ride like it...if that makes sense. Interaction wise, Rivian straight up copied Tesla as far as the Operating System and how the vehicle works. So if you have any time in a Tesla, the Rivian will be super familiar in feel and execution. But if you have a 992 to scratch the handling itch....I'd strongly consider ditching the M3 and getting the Rivan. Unless your're road tripping, in which case give the DC fast charging network another 18 to 24 months to start moving in the right direction, and for the Rivian to be able to charge on the Tesla Supercharger network. But as far as a daily...it's really good. And is a better compliment to a 911 than the M3 is. I grew up in Rockland. In Fairfield County and most of New England....I wouldn't bother with a Raptor. You really gonna park that thing in downtown Greenwich? And taking it on the Merritt? Or up into Westchester on the SMRP or Taconic? LOL. You'd hog both lanes. A Rivian is far cooler in those social circles and can handle ANY offroading you're going to throw into it in Fairfield, Westchester, etc. |

Went on a Rivian test drive this past weekend, my wife has had a reservation for over a year so we’ve been waiting. We drove an R1S, so not entirely the same, but close enough. I came away pretty disappointed actually. Some gripes in no particular order:
I’m sure I’m forgetting a few things. Overall I was not impressed, and I’m a guy that enjoys EV’s. Raptors are dope. Both of my brothers have gen 1 and gen 3 Raptors, and my sister has a Bronco Raptor. They do a lot of off-roading the trucks take the abuse. It’d be a great compliment to a sports car because the experience is so different. Here I am in my lowered BMW afraid to go over speed bumps, and Gravedigger over here doesn’t even know he drove over a curb huge aftermarket for these trucks too if you’re into that You’ll save on gas going with the Rivian, and I’m sure it’s a lot faster from a dig. I’d take a Raptor over one in a heartbeat though.

You dont want a raptor. The 23's are missing locking front diff, alarm, auto start stop and heated steering wheel. The 24 LCI raptor ordering comes out in a few weeks. You want one of those. They are the new look, new tech and hopefully not missing standard options.
Rivian are junk. My neighbor works for them in management and he does own one or suggest we buy one. Id keep the 911, M3 and add a raptor in 24. Or dump the m3 and get a raptor. But keep the 911. I had 4 and came back to BMW. I do miss my 911 at times.

The only Raptor I would consider (and I have never owned a truck) would be the RaptoR. F**k me!

I currently have a 2018 Gen 2 Raptor (had since new, 65k miles on her) and the M3.
I have loved every second of the Raptor.... it is an amazing truck and think its the best truck on the road, looks and performance. Plenty big interior, comfortable, fast enough, capable on and off road, sporty design, not horrible MPG for what it is, etc etc... When I bought the M3 earlier this year, couldn't let the Raptor go so I kept it... I really don't need both vehicles but once you get used to the convenience and size of a truck, especially a Raptor, you're hooked. Have a buddy that has a Gen 3 (who had a Gen 2) and said its everything he loved about the Gen 2 but with a better interior. I personally still prefer the look of the Gen2's which is 75% of the reason I haven't gotten a Gen 3. The R's are bad ass, but not worth the mark up. You will not regret getting a Raptor if you do

I test drove a Rivian when getting my oil changed at the BMW dealership. I would suggest test driving both trucks to see which one speaks to you. I did see a pretty sweet R1T today, satin black with like a tent on top of it.

So I did make a decision and the M3 will be leaving me in the next month. I was watching tons of truck reviews on line and was torn which way to go.
We do spend several weeks in Nantucket every year and there is a ton of off-roading and sand driving so this played a role. I also didn’t want to buy something I’m going to have trouble fitting in a parking spot. So I have a glacier blue Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 incoming in early September. The dealership actually gave me kbb trade in value on the M3 and with the tax benefit on the new car I am at private sale price. Reviews look great and although not a beast in straight line performance, it should be a blast to drive in different situations. Already spoke with my SA at BMW and I remain number 1 on line if an M5 touring comes state side. So I will be back at BMW in the futur. Will miss the M3 but this is the time to step away.

Man... I was talking all kinds of crap about not buying a 23 Raptor. That they are missing options (and they are), the 24's will have new tech. Yada yada. And what did my dumbass go and do??? I bought a 23 Raptor that was on a lot. ...I blame you! lol. We love it! Thats somewhat the plan. I really like the RRW wheels. But they are currently sold out. Which is fine. Because I need to figure out my lift too. I was going to do RPG coil spacer. They are literally next door to my office. But am worried I will look squatted since the 23's and R seem to come from factor much more level than other years. At least thats what Ive read a few times now. And Im not willing to do rear block spacers to fix it if the front is too high. So now Im looking at Eibauch springs up front only or all around. But they are technically a down grade since they are linear springs vs oem progressive. But will I notice? Probably not. But I will jump this thing sooner than later! I never jumped my last one. I'm fore sure jumping this one!

I confess I'm baffled by these comparisons of wildly dissimilar vehicles. Then again, I live on a little farm and my truck does utility duties and is definitely not a performance vehicle.

Good luck finding any Raptor without ADM or even first-party markups out there.
There have been Ford employees who've been complaining on forums Ford is throwing markups on them *mid production*, telling them to take it or leave it. |

So the green machine was traded in. It was a great car but I really wasn’t using it due to the 911 GTS. Ended up going with a Silverado ZR2. Couldn’t convince myself to pay 20k over sticker for a raptor. Never had a pick up before and so far its freakin awesome. It’s like a toy that can go anywhere.
Interestingly they had some awesome cars at the Chevy dealership including a Ferrari 430 as well as R8 V10. All traded in for pickup trucks! Lol. Will be back in a bmw when the M5 touring hits the states.

I think a sports or sporty car and a 4WD truck is a great combo to have. I currently have my G82 paired up with a Jeep Wrangler, but I've had several pickups in the past and miss having one. I am pretty sure I'm going to get the new Tacoma...maybe even the TRD pro if i can get one without a markup. I like the ZR2 a lot though, good purchase, and it goes well with your 911.
