I did some searching on here and used "oil" as the keyword for posts and didn't see anything pop up where people had discussed engine oil recommendations for our s58 engines.

I did find one thread where people are discussing whether to use 0w-30 or 5w-30 and it has some good information as the topic expanded into reviewing some oil studies and also whether a 0w-40 or 5w-40 is better for our engines. It also contains a study where it shows the BMW oil is actually not so great and if used at the factory recommended change intervals, breaks down and creates a high risk for sludge and wear. I just got my 2024 G80 a few weeks ago and am trying to get a leg up on the oil recommendations. I have a 2016 F80 and it has 107K on it. I've used Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 all of it's life and it runs as if new. Leaks nothing, doesn't use any oil, etc. I also remember the lead BMW tech mentioning that my valvetrain area was the cleanest he had ever seen when he had it removed (I think for a PCV valve change). I haven't read anyone mentioning the Rotella on here yet although I know a lot of guys used it on the S55 platform. I live in Texas where the summer heat broils us alive. I'm trying to get enough info to determine if I should stay with using the Rotella T6 or not. It is a damn good oil I know. One of the benefits of it is the detergents and the ability of it to withstand a lot of turbocharged punishment. It's marketed as an oil tough enough for turbo diesel engines.

One forum member mentioned that the Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 was on the thicker end of the 5w's so he didn't like the idea of running it in the S58 as we have rather tight tolerances. Does anyone know if the tolerances between the S55 in the F80 M3 are that much different than the S58 to where we would definitely need to run a 0w at startup?

I know engine oil is often a greatly debated topic. I've had two BMW tech leads (one promoted to tech manager), tell me that the BMW oil is designed to get you to 100,000 and nothing more. The weight and durability is designed to meet fuel efficiency requirements and 'get you by' but not with longevity and trouble free operation at higher mileages in mind. I'm wondering if the Mobile One 0w-40 Euro Spec formula is a good option, if we think the Shell Rotella 5w-40 is too thick. What are you guys using?

This really comes down to whether you plan to keep your car stock with a factory warranty, or not. If so, you need to run the factory spec oil regardless of whether something else may be technically better. In the unlikely event you have an issue BMW will 100% use your out-of-spec oil as a reason to avoid paying a claim. There’s just no reason to risk it.

On my tuned car running ethanol I am using 300v 5w-40. I will probably switch to something thinner for the winter months when the car will be on pump gas. Haven’t figured out exactly what yet.

At this point, I plan on keeping the car long term. My F80 (which I still have) is a 2016. I want to use an oil that will protect the S58 engine like the Shell Rotella 5w-40 has for the S55 engine. At this point, I'm trying to determine if the tolerances/differences between the S55 and S58 engine are different enough to where perhaps the Shell Rotella isn't as good of an option. Additional Note: I have always changed my oil and filter every 3,000 miles. This includes ensuring that those changes happened within the factory's prescribed 10,000 miles intervals.

If you drive all-street then BMW TPT changed at 3-5K OCI is just fine, and if you do have a warranty issue they can’t complain. Even for weekend street racing TPT is fine. If you run an Ethanol fuel mix just change the oil every 2K. I’m doing a dump and fills (no filter changes) in between the dealership’s every-10K oil and filter service. Buying oil from FCP Euro makes it almost free.

If I was out of warranty and doing hard street use I might switch to Motul Specific LL-01FE.

If I were doing a beginner-level track weekend once or twice I would use Motul 8100 X-Cess Gen2 5W-40.

If I were doing moderate to heavy track frequently I would use Motul 300V 5W-30.

Moderate to heavy track…I’d put the X-Cess in (gas to E30) or 300V (E50 and up, not gas).

I just put amsoil signature series 5w30 in my g80 last weekend and it runs great. on the 0w cold starts sounded really clanky, now they are just clanky lol.

0-30 is factory and they use that because the bearing clearance is so tight. Engineers are pretty good I'd recommend staying with that.

No they use that for emissions and fuel economy

Of course it's your car your choice if you don't plan on keeping this car for more than 4 years then don't bother

I just switched to Liqui Moly 0w-40. I live in Houston. This was the first oil change since the break in oil. I will be changing it every 5k miles. Also sending off samples to see how the engine likes this oil. More frequent oil changes if necessary.

I'm currently tuned on an e50 ish flex tune. I'll post here whenever I do the next oil change and send the oil out for testing. But that will be a little while considering I just did it.

I switched to Motul X-Cess 5w40. I was going to do Motul 0w40 x-max but x-cess is just a better oil. Living in Vegas I don’t see sub freezing temperatures.

I get coupons for oil changes and alignments in the mail. Sign up for whatever you can at the dealer and call every so often asking about specials. Just got the oil changed on our gle53 at mb for $80. It’s more expensive for me to do it myself.

Well it is. If you even check the manual it says the higher viscosity oils will degrade fuel economy.

Also why they recommend using BMW LL FE.

FE stands for.....you guessed it. Fuel Economy.

How is the liqui moly 0w40 holding up for you? Any problems?
