Paralyzed G82 M4 driver
I currently have a G82 on order for production week 37 and I just want to share my experience with this car from the beginning of its production. I was injured in 2017 and left paralyzed from the waist down. I spent half a year in a hospital in Colorado having to relearn basic things I’d previously taken for granted. It’s safe to say in more ways than one I am lucky to be sitting here telling my story. During my stay in Colorado it was heavily hinted at that I would need to look at a vehicle that was more accessible like a van of some sort. I’ve owned my E92 since 2014 and I’ve had an E46 M3 previous to that. I’ve owned two 350Z’s before that so you can see where a van would be problematic. I was not going to let this deter me from being able to continue driving my E92. I began the process of making my E92 adaptable for my needs which ranged from installing hand controls to learning how to get in and out of my car with the wheelchair properly.
Which has now lead me to my new car that I have recently ordered. It is a 2022 M4 Competition Xdrive, the specs are listed below. I will be installing the same type of hand controls in my G82 as I did my E92 which is electronic and cuts off the accelerator pedal rerouting power to the hand controls. I want to share this build with you all in hopes of showing that it’s possible, that even when you’re told no, there’s always a way to adapt, take it from me. Build specs G82 comp Xdrive Brooklyn Grey Full black leather 826M rims black Carbon fiber trim Executive package Park assist package Driving assistance package shadow lights Laser lights Carbon bucket seats Carbon exterior package M driver professional Red calipers Here is a video of the hand controls and how the currently work in my E92 if you’re curious

I recently had the left foot accelerator installed due to health issue on my Corolla hybrid and work out well, hopefully by next year I can drive the F80 MT again.

I'm more impressed with your resilience and determination. Character is strong. I can't even imagine the amount of work required to do rehabilitation and relearning but have to admire the can-do attitude.
The modifications required to make these type dreams achievable are amazing as well. Enjoy your car in good health and would love to see you at the drag strip shitting on people. Be humbling afterwards. |

A friend of mine has been paralyzed for a couple of decades following his motorcycle accident. He’s driving an E92 with hand controls. A few years ago we attended a BMW Ultimate Driving event at Citi Field. Prior to the event we asked the BMW if they can accommodate my friend. Lo and behold, BMW of NA came thru and gave my friend a 540i fitted with the same exact hand controls for an autocross session!
I’m not sure what the brand of his hand controls is but it resembles motorcycle controls and he’s very happy with it.

I was under the impression that BMW could and would provide hand controls, factory-supplied. No aftermarket required. You should look into that.

Have you seen 826m wheels in person? The bicolor really look very dark (much darker than the bicolor 666m) yet you can still see the details of the wheels. I would really suggest bicolor over black 826m's.

I do agree the bicolor looks much better than the 666m’s. I struggled with this decision but in the end I wanted gloss black to go off set the grey. I didn’t want the silver to clash with the black and gray. But if I ended up with bicolor wheels I wouldn’t be upset either way.

I figured (guessing) that with all of the electronic nannies that cars have now, many of which are there for automation, it would simplify the installation of hand controls, assuming of course that the manufacturer planned for that in some regard.
