Damn, my sales guy just told me today that because of the current used car market dropping recently, that they have to push back delivery of my new M3, which is supposed to arrive in the next week or two, because they can't absorb the remaining payments on my current lease like they previously had said they would.

Wife was so excited that we were expecting to get the new M3 by Christmas and New Years.

How would pushing back delivery change anything? Used car market will continue to decline.

Interesting. So all the comments here about BMW moving to a build your own model are not exactly accurate. Dealer inventory is still a sales model.

I think he means because of diminished resale value as a result of the market, they can no longer offer him the amount of his current payoff (he's trying to get out of his lease early). So as a result his options are to either make the remaining payments on his lease in a lump sum, or simply ride out the lease till termination, which is what it sounds like they're suggesting.

I think those comments are driven more by people's desire to eliminate the dealer network. In reality what's happening is simply a result of constrained supply. I think what many don't realize is that having an MTO (made to order) model as the exclusive way to purchase a car is great when demand meets or exceeds supply, but the second demand begins to drop and becomes irregular, your production and capacity planning becomes suboptimal. That's where the dealer network comes in to play to absorb inventory.

Dealer holding cost also plays into it since dealers are charged % for cars on lot.

Agreed and very well said. Thanks!

Plus if the dealer stuck with the MTO model and a customer walked in looking to buy a car today they'd lose out on the sale.

What is Thunder, like a blue/black variant?
