I work in purchasing for Toyota so I have the joy of dealing directly with these chipmakers.

To put it shortly, they have everyone by the balls. Even China doesn't have the tech to make their own…making a semiconductor plant is highly difficult. Making a nuclear bomb is probably easier.
When Ford has to cut back on its core f-150 trucks, that basically means every and all options have been exhausted. The war room when that decision was made would have been a sight to see.

Also, switching to a substitute "chip" will require years of testing as well…these chips are such an integral part of how your car runs. Car industry is notorious for speed of adopting changes that adds risk.

2023/2024 is when we should see things level off.

And its only going to get worse. Cars are only getting more advnaced, requiring more and more chips, and computers. Back in the day when cars only had an ECU. Now they have ECUs, BCMs, TCMs, and more.

So which one sells for top dollar due to this chip shortage. Used Manual or used Comp?

From the other threads, I think you're the only one around here seeing those deals...maybe your fellow Californians should get in contact with you.
Just received my G83 allocation at $1000 less wholesale cost and buy rate MF on the east coast. Just need to have a long term, super tight relationship and be an easy, loyal customer to deal with.

Interesting story about chip shortage. (Not BMW-specific but about automotive industry)

try calling them, once you go there they are either sold or will have a 10-20K markup. 9 out of 10 the car is not even there, sold and gone and just a stock photo is shown....if the car is there it will have a markup (they don't put the markup on the internet prices). If I didn't have my car I'd probably pay 10K markup for it if I had to.

I know it doesn't help you guys over there, but its the same here in the UK, there's a supply of cars new and approved used at 'regular' prices.

I've even put an enquiry through good old Matt Watson's CarWow and got below retail offers from multiple dealers - with options.

There's already multiple reports of manufacturers 'decontenting' cars, i.e. they're pulling features and offering new 'trim' levels at slightly different prices that have less tech.

In BMW specific terms there are posts in these forums and other stories that features are going AWOL - AFAIK this is affecting things like wireless charging and driving assistance features in particular.

Slightly more worringly some of the reports I've heard don't mention the prices are reducing with the reduced equipment!

Just an update for the G8X model and UK market specifically, as per my dealer the wireless charging and WiFi hotspot option is now back and no longer "restricted" (you can also see it available on the configurator too)

This means M3/M4 is back to full specification (...in the UK atleast)

Good to know. On an unrelated note, what colour interior did you go for with the Oxide Grey on your M3C XDrive?

I went for Full Merino Black. Was very close to choosing Full Fiona Red. Previously had Sakhir Orange interior in my M4 and that was more red than orange so felt like a change

Just curious if this does drag out until 2023/24 as some have predicted...do you think BMW will extend the production run of the G8X to allow customers a chance to actually get one???

Now this morning there are reports of chip factories shutting down for days at a time to comply with electricity issues. The issues are piling up.

Can you refer me to them? I’m having such a hard time finding a dealership who isn’t marking up. My current order has a marked up MF.
