The thing about the ad was it didn't capitalize on lengthy history of M and make something that looked and felt organic from a visual perspective.

It looked and feels very contrived. They clearly wanted to use a take on car culture that has existed for numerous decades, a late night car meet to chill and hang with friends to talk about cars but the execution was utterly horrible.

They could have easily found real owner's of various M cars produced over the last 50 years and just let them talk to each other and film it. It's real people and their deep passions for the brand that are the fire that keeps BMW M alive and well. That would have felt real and more importantly organic. This thing looks like a cringe worthy Fast & Furious BMW M ad.

The dinosaur is the guy who doesn’t do his homework to understand that the battery powered vehicle is actually very damaging for the planet… Very damaging…

While every NA engine had a certain character and engineering approach being an unique “organism” in this wide spectrum of “animals” ,the electric vehicle will not benefit from the same very personal experience due to being very similar in any aspects with the others, providing less unique attributes that can convince that its DNA is “that different”.
Quiet with electric buzz providing no exhilarating experience in terms of involving all your senses, the new bread of vehicle is pretty similar with the one next door so I am not sure what it will make it really that different to justify a certain image, or more, a different price… even the luxury materials are lately replaced buy cheaper materials trumpeted as green.
So, pretty much, just another object that you choose because the drawers fit your needs or because the reviews praised more some better ergonomics properties.

So, I am not sure if this “run the brand to the ground “ is not actually a “follow the herd” suicide….

There is a BMW project manager that stated on camera that if someone wanted one they would build a car for them. Hit them up.

Lol... sure, that'll be $20m for your one-off CSL, a four year wait, and good luck getting it fixed if it needs any parts.

I'm sure BMW leadership thinks the upcoming M4 CSL fills this market niche well enough, and that's probably true. But if they're going to create an M-only model, I wish they would have done it with a proper sports car, not a three-ton caricature.

Sorry, obviously you know less than nothing and your handle says it all. I am bmw M and 35+years of continuous ownership so I don’t care what your wokness bs talk says. Go to Disneyland with your electric crap, I know what driving is about and what a sports car is and I’ll continue to drive and hear my cars for as long as I’m around.

M was for Motorsport, and electric has nothing to do with the sport. Go live in CHOP with your electric dream. I’ll stay with Stuttgart and Marinello.

How diverse.

Side note: I feel shunned that there was no sound clip of an e60 M5. If it was there, I might've missed it.

First, it’s spelled Maranello. Second, Motorsport will all be electric in the next decade. Have fun hanging on to the past…

If this train wreck of a thread is any indication, gathering M owners and recoding what they say wouldn't exactly go so well. It would be people bitching about the XM, electric cars, M dilution and whatever nonsense they can come up with to be upset about because in the end, it's just a bunch of people who feel helpless because they can't stop Father Time.

It's a 2-way street. Clearly some people hate the grille and the loss of feedback to the driver and other changes as well. And yep, that is their opinion. However, many are arguing against that very opinion as though it's "wrong", and putting them down for it (you're just dinosaurs). Obviously some people here love the direction change, talking about how sales are great, and whatever else that somehow disproves or invalidates others not liking that direction.

This isn't us vs them though it seems to have turned out that way.

I'm a Gen-x guy who grew up with the M cars of the 80's - E30 M3, the first M6, the E28 M5. Those were my aspirational cars growing up and I was able to be owners of multiple Ms including the E36 M3, E46 M3 (I had 5x so I love this platform), The E92 M3, E39 M5.

It may be a broken record but the BMW of today, including the one represented in this horrible ad is not the M cars I grew up with and appreciated owning. For those who don't know because you never owned these cars from the past - there was a DNA that made driving those cars brillant. That DNA is still in some of the cars today like the M2 and the M3 but the rest has been diluted to the point of being some 'woke+IKEA+Toyota' feeling that is not M.

M is not for everyone, I'm sorry to say. I know in today's 'everyone must be invited' world that is blasphemy but the M car was for the top enthusiast who didn't care about the badge, but the chassis, motor, and other parts that made the plain BMW series into a M car. Now today you got everything badged M, and all of it is mostly marketing bullshit. The M badge just indicates to the masses you paid more for that BMW car trim.

The beauty of the M is that anyone today can still experience the true essence of M by buying one of these 'older' but true models. They are out there, some are getting up in price but as soon as you drive one you're understand why so many 'hater's here dispise the way BMW is carrying on with themselves and the M brand in general. You can't succeed in the future without looking at the past. BMW likes to refer to the past when they bring out all these new cars but they really haven't look at their past selves for a while.

So what am I driving these days. Porsches. Cause even in today's geopolitical, environmental, woke climate Porsche still makes cars for the enthusiast. Yeah they make the EV and SUV, but they know who their core customers are (no matter how small in volume compared to the SUV and EV sales) and haven't forgotten their past as they build for their future.

Seems like M still make a car that's ticking all the boxes for the OG fans.

Sometimes I cringe at the direction of the brand, I cringe more with the direction of the world in general.
At least they are providing options for all and somewhere within the lineup you'll hopefully find a car that's everything you need.
The worlds changing and being in business year 2022 it can't be easy. We all have to adapt.
M is not what it used to be.
Neither is the world.

Porsche lives in the same world and they are treating their customers right. BMW can't get any leeway here, they shot the bed. Its all on them that M is a cluster mess of kumbaya meets IKEA.

I just watched the video and I feel their marketing has totally lost it.

Let me preface my rant by stating that I'm all for moving into the future. I'm 44 yo male with my first M being a '96 M3 bought in 2002 and have since owned 4 full fledged M cars.

M stands for and represents Motorsports. WTF does "I am M" mean?
Why couldn't they make the commercial as a celebration of everything that the M division has accomplished in 50 years? As simple as that!

I would be royally pissed if I were an engineer working at M seeing that my work is being turned into (as someone pointed out) a cult recruiting tool.

Wake up BMW!!!

The feedback in my G82 is slightly better or equal to my F80 M3 CS. It certainly didn't get worse.

It's a double edged sword. I'm not a huge fan of the M dilution, but if capturing a wider audience to make a business model sustainable allows the M division to keep operating so we still get M cars, then it's hard to argue against it. Porsche does it with their GT cars and Turbo models. Do we need a Turbo Macan or Cayanne? I don't, but someone might, and their SUVs are their bread and butter. They need those sales to keep making 911's and Caymans.
