How does your G80/82 handle the cold?
Curious about others experience when the temperatures drop excessively (or for that matter, when outside is way too hot but I think that has fewer symptoms?).
For me, the car seems fine once it is driven for ~5-10min, but in those first minutes when it is still warming up....I feel like I have issues with clutch being less responsive. When it's super cold, clutch almost feels a bit sticky to release. (I have a manual). Even if I remote start or run the car for ~10min before driving, I think transmission doesn't warm up at all until I start moving. That said, once warm the car seems totally fine, and I've done my fair share of sliding around in the snow for fun, and the car has no issues with snow packing up any vents or openings too badly. |

Same here. When the outside temp is -10 C, it took at least 20 mins of general driving to warm up the oil to opt. temp. That part is killing me

That's wild..... never heard of a manual car remote starting. Wonder why they got rid of the feature.
Anyway - to answer your other question - yeah I do feel the clutch is mushy and even a bit sticky when first driving in super cold weather. I'm also in Chicagoland so I'm feeling this cold (although I haven't driven my M3 in a few weeks - been driving the beater around). But I didn't really think anything of it as the clutch goes back to normal after a minute or two of driving.

I guess all of my other manuals warm up much more quickly. I have an old Miata that is ready to race after 1-2 quick minutes. As someone else mentioned, my M4 doesn't even get oil up to temp after a 20min drive in this weather.

Clutch fluid is brake fluid, but [manual] transmission fluid (what you feel in the stick) is not. One is for the clutch engagement, the transmission fluid is the lubrication for the gears themselves. Transmission fluid takes a lot longer to warm up versus engine oil, and it's generally much thicker (more so when cold). This is another reason why "idling" a car too long to warm it up isn't really useful because the other fluids (transmission, differential) don't warm up at the same rate, especially when idling.
Drive slow, shift slow, baby the car until ALL components are fully warm. If it's super cold, just baby it the whole trip. |

I found that my brand new (<1K miles) M4 seems to have a stuck or frozen parking brake when first transitioning from stationary to moving backward out of the garage, even after warm-up. I can feel tension build up, and it makes a slight pop sound and then I'm good to go.
Otherwise it's been totally fine in the cold. |

Car has seen a few winters now with no issues apart from the noisy belt once in a while. At below 0 degrees F, the car never gets to the normal operating temperature. Did an hour and a half driving mixed on highway and regular roads, but oil temp was around 180F. I'll need to look into blocking off the radiators somehow.
