Which year? My 2023 has a USB 2.0 by the cup holders that is also a data port, but the USB-C in the center console seems to be charge only: older vehicle, either one works. I haven’t tried my iPod bc I have an SD card with my entire iTunes library on it in a reader in the 2.0 port, works well.

It isn't. I have a 256GB USB stick that works dandy in that port. Possible that it can't read an iPod or iPad, but it does work for USB-C FAT32 sticks. I have heard that it may have changed with iDrive 8, though.

The owner's manual shows which USBs are power-only and which ones are power + data. It even specifies the power output for each port.
In my 2023 M3 6MT, there's a USB-C port in the center console and 2 USB-C ports in the back seat. These are power-only. There's also a USB-A port by the storage tray in front of the shifter that supports power + data transfer--this would be the port to use when attempting to connect an iPod. |

Sandy - You're right, on my '21 G80, the front USB port takes the larger input. But, I can't figure out how to access the iPod on the screen. I checked off USB on Personal Input: still nothing to allow the iPod to play. I can see, on the iPod, that music is playing but nothing coming out of the speakers.

Sandy - Thanks. I got it working. Not sure how, but I'll take it as a win.

- Unplug USB-A (power + data - front storage bin)
- Unplug USB-C (power - center console) - Get a USB-C (power + data) OEM socket - Run a 19” WDS extension cable from USB-A to USB-C - Replace USB-C (power) socket with USB-C (power + data) socket - This will make USB-C in center console a power + data port. |

Dude, awesome, thanks for the info on this! I have a 2022, but if I decide to get a newer M3 I'll definitely be doing this. So much cleaner to have the USB stick inside the center console.

FWIW I have one of these USB Sticks from an old car, and plugged it into my '24. It works perfect and is so low profile you can barely see it. If anything it's a good splash cover for the USB plug. I can't imagine using that with a cable on a regular basis because it would be in the way.

Back to the original question, I have an old 120 GB iPod and the system will not recognize it. It says it is not supported.

It doesn't work with older devices. Best option is moving that music to a USB stick.
