S58 "whine" noise on cold start?

I started my car up today (G87) and heard a whine noise and am wondering if it’s something to worry about or if it’s normal. I found a video of another G87 that had the same sound. Here’s a link to the video: https://www.reddit.com/r/BMW/comment...rm=1&rdt=52191

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

My 2024 M4 Competition with 4K makes the same exact sound. Sorry, but I do not know the source of the noise.
I'm more worried about the rattling noise coming from the engine after it comes down from the cold start high idle. Had a N55 make a similar noise and I beat on that one for 70K without any issues, so I would assume that is normal too???

That extremely high pitch electrical whine? I'm shocked the phone/video could even pick that up.

I had a similar sound with an Anker USB adapter in my car once. It looks like you do have a USB thing plugged it - I'd maybe try unplugging everything auxiliary.

The video isn’t mine, I found it on Reddit. But that whine doesn’t seem to be related to anything like that, in my car, all I have is a usb type c to lightning cable to charge my phone

I’m assuming like other direct injection cars, that ticking / rattling is the injectors.

Freaking noisy in the S58 for sure..,

Sounds similar to my G81. Some days it’s noisier than others, always goes away.

A friend of mine did some digging around, people are thinking it’s something to do with the AC system? Since it starts up automatically when you turn on the car

Either way I don’t think it’s anything we should be losing sleep over haha

Nothing there that sounds like an issue to me. I agree with the others that the S58 can be a noisy bugger when ticking over (injector noises etc) - so long as it starts fine, and drives properly I don't get too worried about noises. You can drive yourself nuts overthinking this sort of thing.

This is common on any S58 platform, surprised BMW has not released a fix for this. My 23 M3 comp does this in the cold, it's obnoxious but goes away. Thinking its related to an idler pulley. They replace my belt and belt tensioner and it still does it. Very hard to replicate though, weather never cooperates lol.

5.0 coyotes had an issue similar where Ford even admitted to hearing the noise. They wrote an official statement to there techs and shops that it's a normal operating sound of the coyote.

probs something to do with being direct inject. Some guys on those forums were losing sleep over the noise thinking it was their lifters. I'm sure it's just a characteristic of this motor as well. Most modern engines are all noisy.

I'd bet money. This is what the noise is!

Loud tapping and clicking has always been DI, not just the injectors but also the pump(s), which the S58 has two of and right at the top where you’ll easily hear them. People constantly misdiagnose the noise as valvetrain lash issues or tensioner issues with timing chains. I’m not sure why people buy performance car and expect it to be dead quiet or something.

That whine in the OP video could easily just be trans spin-up noise, especially if it happens more when it’s cold out on first starts in the morning. Not out of the ordinary either and it doesn’t even stand out as abnormal unless it gets more and more prevalent. I’ve also see some idler or tensioner pulleys act this way when cold out, but that’s with age when they should be changed. Throw out bearings will do the same on an MT car when acting up, but that will change pitch or go away as you manipulate the clutch and it’s a dead giveaway then if it’s that or not.
