I'm one of those weirdos where no matter what I drive I get 20mpg.

151hp Accord back in high school? 20mpg

2.0T GTI- 20mpg

STI- 20mpg

3.0T S5- 20mpg

F80, G80- 20mpg

The only one different was my w204 C63, couldn't get out of 13mpg on that one.

I'm not a gearhead by any stretch, just an enthused driver, but I'm guessing the excellent gas mileage has to do with the engine output not having to strain very much at all in order to maintain freeway speeds. Prior to the S55 engine I was in an N20 (X1) and the S55 can get me up to the mountains (Yosemite, California) on a single tank where the N20 really struggled to keep pace. With the advancements in the S58 engine it seems even more efficient when not heavy on the pedal.

I'd expect that out of a D.

Wonder how much that "mild hybrid" is kicking in at cruising speeds...

That's pretty good. I don't think I've gotten better than 23mpg. And that was on a drive up from SoCal to Monterey. Other than that, I never seen better than 18mpg on a regular basis!

I'm one if those people that track MPG other than in the car. It's given me advance notice of problems from time to time. Haven't had my car long but here is my MPG.

Before we get too excited and get into a circle jerk about modern DI/turbo engines and how wonderful they are, anytime you drive a S65 in a highway loop at 72mph you will get over 20mpg. More like 24mpg.

I routinely do the exact same 250 mile trip in a lead-follow scenario with a S65 E90 DCT and a S55 F80 DCT. There is a 4mpg difference. I do this same trip over ten times a year and the results are pretty consistent.

I'm jealous my x3MC gets 16 average over 35,000 miles. Best it will do on the highway is 19-20 tops.

They are not on the same performance level though
The M3 E9x delivers the performance of an OG M2 with the consumption of a F90 M5, which is perfectly normal for such an engine but I would not call it a miracle.

I had a 2013 z06, it would get close to 30mpg cruising at 70mph…and that was from a 7ltr pushrod v8. I've got a 2017 G63, it's got a 5.5ltr V8…I think it gets about 10mpg (if you're lucky)…weight and aero make a huge difference.

One thing to note is the huge difference in efficiency between RON 95 and 98 fuel... From driving in france were i purposely use alway 98 vs Ireland where there is only 95, I can easily do an extra 100 km in one tank.

Over a 4000 km road trip abroad with the car in holiday hauling mode (family of 3 + bags), including a track day and 5 days in the alps driving spiritedly in mountain passes, I managed to stay at 10.5l/100km average... pretty amazing efficiency with the 8th gear on the motorway.

Absolutely, not on the same level of performance. That's why I references the 'E9X couldn't even do 20mpg on the highway' comment. That is not accurate at all.

I averaged around 26.5mpg cruising pretty good at around 80-85mph on my trip back from the PC...I've been impressed so far.

The efficiency of BMW's powertrains is one of their biggest competitive differentiators now IMO. Many competitors have caught up or surpassed BMW in terms of driving dynamics (e.g., CT4/G70 vs 3 series), but they are slower and have way worse mpg.

The B48 and B58 offer crazy good highway mpg. Glad to see S58 overperform too.

So whats the mileage you were getting on the N20?
