Clutch Pedal Issue: What Happened?

I press the clutch pedal to start the car, hear a “snap”, then this thing falls into the footwell. The pedal now feels soft/vague/spongy, but still functions. Any idea what happened?

Looks like your clutch return spring broke. This is primarily there to ensure the clutch pedal comes all the way back up so it contacts the switch that allows the cruise control to function.

I can't find a picture of the current one, but this is what the part looked like on the E9X M3:

The car should drive fine while it's broken, and the dealer can replace it for you under warranty.
