This is one of many recent BMWBLOG renders where they envision a "what if" scenario for the G8x...because that's what the internet needs...more inaccurate G8x renders..

I asked the question to the marketing divisions responsible for BMW and indeed BMW M regarding the foot traffic who have socially distanced themselves to view THE 4 and M3/M4 about the Grille controversy and if it has maintained with the viewings?
In the case of the 4 there was apprehension but when seen in real life the response has somewhat been favourable. If you have seen the 4 in real life? Then against official launch pictures you know it definitely does not photograph well. One feature identified of note is especially when looking at the rear where the definition of the body over the wheel arches is not highlighted well. It makes the body heavier over the rear wheels. With the twin M's the people who have been lucky to see it (well in Europe) anyway say they relatively like the new appearance. Yes there has been some Alfaisti commentary to its similarities, as one would expect. Testament to Alfa Romeo for making the Guilia Cloverleaf so good to warrant BMW M to benchmark. But generally overall response has been high and favourable. And these people would definitely raise flags if there was extremely bad feedback. Personally from a practicality point of view I preferred M3 over M4 but rule out both for the M3 Touring. Although for the wait I would take an M3 and wait for the Touring. In both occasions they do point out that the Internet and social media is usually not representative of real life.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
I don't know what else the marketing people at BMW could say. They're not the designers. How could they raise flags at this point if the feedback was bad? BMW can't change the designs at this stage. I'm not sure how they would not be concerned however. Every single review I have read about the 4-series or M3/M4 has mentioned how horrible the grille looks. Marketing is all about controlling messaging but they're not worried? Hmm. |

The x7 constantly gets killed by some for the grill yet has been a hugely successful launch. The M8 which is constantly held up as "the right way to do design" had 2/3 models canceled (coupe, vert) for 2021 due to sales flop.... |

The interesting thing for me has been the feedback from people going to specific M reveals and posting about not liking it, while others do like it, it seems very mixed. That makes me a little apprehensive about how it will look. Looking forward to the reveal. |

If they get two sales from regular folk for every lost enthusiast, then it will have been worth it. Guess that works for the 4, but I would expect your enthusiasts are the ones more likely to drop 80+ large on the M cars.
I wonder about a marketing department that is OK with a car that doesn't photograph well but presents better in person. That puts a hell of a burden on someone to get people into the dealerships or the cars out in front of the public. Basically eliminating web, print, and TV right out of the gate? Solid business strategy. |
