It's been discussed before. I don't see this being a thing ever. Apple most likely has to build in API support into the OS for BMW to access the map data. Apple has incentive to only allow their own Maps app for this to work.

Google supports Google Maps in the dash on Android Auto, so you'd think they'd get it to work on iOS as well if it were supported, but it doesn't work.

I don't typically find the "Maps in the Instrument Cluster" super useful anyway. Even using Apple Maps. Notifications still pop up on the CarPlay screen if you're in any other app, which means you have to tap to get rid of it to do what you want in the other app, constantly. It's annoying. I just don't use it and leave Maps up on the large screen and leave music up in the Instrument Cluster.

This change was specifically for enhanced Apple Maps support in instrument-cluster displayed navigation. I've been running the beta. It basically adds things like time to destination, mileage, upcoming turns and street names. Before, it only displayed you, your navigation line, and the arrival time. It was pretty barebones.

Nothing about other apps supporting it, but I guess theoretically we could see it in the future. I'd imagine this would be an iOS 18 or 19 thing, rather than a point release.
