Dark license plates

Hi all, kind of a random question for the CA folks here.

I took delivery of my M3 a few weeks ago and just got my license plates in the mail. I was initially told by the dealer that they weren't able to get me the darker colored plates, and I would have to somehow switch them after the fact.

Anyone know what I need to do at this point now that I have the white ones in hand?

Thanks!

Pretty sure you just need to order them now:

Ordered! Thanks!

The dark legacy plate should look cool on an SSG M3.

You just need to go your local DMV (or insurance company office if they offer in-house DMV services). Bring your white plates, fill out the requisite form and pay the special license fee (it’s $50 up front as well as an additional $50 per year tacked onto your annual registration dues. They’ll take your white plates from you and issue you a temporary paper plate while your black plates are being issued (mine took about three weeks).

Anytime I can avoid going into a DMV, I will! Was able to do it online.

$50 one-time and then I think $40 per year.

I also called the DMV just to make sure I followed the right process, and was told that it could take up to 6 months to get the plates.

Based on principal, that’s super sketchy that you’re essentially paying for year 1 and potentially getting them for only half a year, but oh well.

I haven’t thought about what I’m supposed to do with the existing white plates I have. Hopefully I don’t have to drop them off in person. 😬

I ordered my legacy personal plates on 1/24/23. Still have not arrived. I was told they are averaging 6-9 months.

Wow. I would have thought you had them by now. Mine never took that long. Maybe a few months at most. And Im talking fully personal plate. Not just a new color with random plate number.

My most recent legacy customer plate took about 6 months and this was back in November 2021.

At least the DMV mails you the custom plate now! They used to only send them to a local office and you'd get a post card in the mail to pick them up. Then you'd have to wait in that insane line to pick them up.

Personalized, or just standard dark plates? Mine are just the standard random numbers.

Personalized. Shouldn't make that much of a damn difference...

I think I remember hearing that the personalized ones are made by inmates. The standard sequential ones are prob automated?
